Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout;
But there is no joy in Mudville the Bronx — mighty Casey A-Rod has struck out.

(With apologies to Ernest Thayer)

Am I upset over the revelations about A-Rod?  As a baseball fan, I’m sick and tired of this whole steroid nightmare and the fact that MLB owners seem to be completely unwilling to do anything about it.  I think players who use performance enhancing items should face some sort of serious life-long punishment.  The minimum should be the dreaded “*” by their name and by all their records. They should also be prohibited from ever being elected to the Hall of Fame.

Oh the other hand, we’re currently talking about the Damn Yankees (a musical title, FYI). I like to see life as uncomfortable for them as possible, esp. considering the way Joe Torre was treated.

Did you really think A-Rod had not juiced himself up at one time or another?  If you were thinking he was “pure” then I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you, along with box seats to the Mets.

On the other hand at least, when cornered, Alex Rodriguez had the grace to admit his used performance enhancing steroids. His position is now entirely different from either Barry Bonds or Roger Clemens – legally.  He also used the steroids before they became “illegal” in MLB.

The very real problem is money.  A-Rod is making more money than God. I trust he and Madonna will be quite happy together.  Now though, that his lack of physical “purity” has been exposed, will Madonna the health freak still be interested?

Baseball is a business, a very big business.  Those of us who love and adore the game like to pretend that it is about legend, lore, tradition, and sportsmanship. It is, and it isn’t.  It’s about the big bucks.  You can’t field a team and play those astronomical salaries if you don’t have the big bucks.  You can’t attract a big crowd unless you have either a winning team or a power player the likes of Barry Bonds, A-Rod, or Roger Clemens.

Do you see a trend?

Maybe it’s time for baseball to get back to the purity I love.  Maybe what we really need is a strong Kennisaw Mountain Landis style Commissioner who will make the owners’ lives a living hell.  Fortunately the perfect future Commissioner is now un-employed and needs a job.

Yes, this is yet another shameless plug make George W. Bush the Commissioner of Baseball.  In all honesty, I think he is the only person who is capable of putting the game back to what it once was.  He is strong enough to butt heads with the owners and make them do what is right. Unfortunately the owners are now so corrupt, they don’t give a rip about doing what is right.  All they want is the money.

Maybe the best way to make them behave themselves is a fan boycott of the game.  Baseball fans aren’t stupid.  Baseball fans are special.  We aren’t all that intersted in the long ball, the excitement of a pumped-up chemically enhanced freak.  We want the interplay and the magic that happens in a well pitched masterpiece.  We want excellent fielding, a well managed classic, and players who are playing on their own talent.

Only George W. Bush is going to be able to put the game back to what it should be.
