It is rare for a woman to admit she is wrong, especially when faced with the something as very serious as Star Trek.  I was wrong.  The new Star Trek movie is excellent.  Okay, it may be the best of them all.

sigh

I cried.  I admit that I cried through the birth of James T. Kirk.  I cried at the sight of the Enterprise – 1701 being built, being launched, and I cried at the end when I finally was able to hear the original theme after all those many years and movies.

The Pink Flamingo is the ultimate Trekkie.  I will even admit to the fact that I have a stuffed Tribble sitting in my office, purchased at the Star Trek thingie at the Hilton in Las Vegas.  If you are a regular Pink Flamingo reader, you know I’ve been complaining about this new movie since day one.

I Was Wrong.

When the “crew” was going past the space dock, I had the same reaction I’ve had since I was a little kid.  It just isn’t fair.  I want to be there.  I want to travel in space and do a reality Star Trek thing.

The image of the Enterprise juxtapositioned next to Saturn t just be the most magnificent “scene” in all of science fiction.  I want to go to Saturn.  I want to travel in space.  I want a strong national space program so I might get my wish – if I live another 100 or so years.

I did have several problems with the movie.  First, how on earth did the Romulans acquire Vorlon and Shadow technology.  And, if they were using Vorlon and Shadow technology isn’t that something of a an impossibility?  After all, we’re talking Star Trek and Babylon 5.

The end was dorky.

There is no way a young third year space cadet is going to end up as the captain of a Constitution class star ship, even in the alternative universe Spock’s blunder created, but that’s another post.  Not even James T. Kirk is that good.

THE theme

Now dear, we musn’t rush to judgement as to whether or not your were actually wrong. Had you had all the facts before you, I’m sure you would have come to the conclusion which you now find yourself apologizing. So actually, you were right! How? If this one is the best, there is no way you would have known it was going to be better than the rest. Therefore leaving room for one to assume it would be just like the rest. So in other words, all the others sucked! (j/k)
