How would you like to be appointed to one of the most important positions in the land and have the appointment be based on being a quota?
If Republicans on the Judiciary Committee would use their time to express what it is the GOP believes in, and how they think the Judiciary should behave, they would be better served than acting like a bunch of anti-Hispanic bigots, which is the way they will be portrayed.
In a way I am thrilled over the selection of Sonia Sotomayor for SCOTUS. No, I don’t think she is qualified. But, the gushing that is going on over her nomination is a thing of beauty to behold. No, I’m not going soft. I’m a Sarah Palin supporter. As a supporter of Sarah Palin I am using this appointment as ammunition against the liberal forces that have treated Palin like dirt.
I’ve noticed that there is a trend among some conservatives – already – to do the same for Sotomayor. The Pink Flamingo will not go down this path. This woman must be treated with the same fairness Sarah Palin should be receive, but has not.
Michael Medved is excellent today on the subject. Maybe Medved should be the new head of the GOP. He’s rational, conserative, and uses logic. Seriously, after listening to Rush in the AM, Medved in the afternoon is like a breath of fresh air. I so agree with Medved. Obama could have done much worse, seriously much worse. Sotomayor is basically a judicial lightweight who is no match for Roberts & co. Do you realize what a strong conservative line up we have with Roberts, Scalia, Alito, and Thomas?
Do not make the mistake of supporting the Borking of this woman. It is only going to hurt the GOP. Pick your battles. This is not one of them. Also, having heard the “policy” clip, conservatives are playing it wrong – not playing the full statement. They are doing to Sotomayor what the liberals have done to Sarah Palin.
I will not be a part of it.
There is something else. After having lived in a Hispanic and Catholic majority state for nearly a dozen years, do not ignore the Hispanic woman. This is a woman who attends mass regularly. There is evidence that she is pro-life. There is evidence that she is a praying woman. I’ve found these women to be very rational and rather pragmatic. There is a huge heart, bleeding, but there is usually a desire to do what is right.
Do not treat her the way the liberals have treated Sarah Palin.
“….Gov. Palin may be the second woman vice-presidential candidate on a major party ticket, but she is not the right woman. Sadly, she is a woman who opposes women’s rights, just like John McCain. The fact that Palin is a mother of five who has a 4-month-old baby, a woman who is juggling work and family responsibilities, will speak to many women. But will Palin speak FOR women? Based on her record and her stated positions, the answer is clearly No. In a gubernatorial debate, Palin stated emphatically that her opposition to abortion was so great, so total, that even if her teenage daughter was impregnated by a rapist, she would “choose life” — meaning apparently that she would not permit her daughter to have an abortion. Palin also had to withdraw her appointment of a top public safety commissioner who had been reprimanded for sexual harassment, although Palin had been warned about his background through letters by the sexual harassment complainant. What McCain does not understand is that women supported Hillary Clinton not just because she was a woman, but because she was a champion on their issues. They will surely not find Sarah Palin to be an advocate for women.
Sen. Joe Biden is the VP candidate who appeals to women, with his authorship and championing of landmark domestic violence legislation, support for pay equity, and advocacy for women around the world….”
This is a thing of beauty. Read what she said about Sotomeyer.
“…This morning we will celebrate, and this afternoon NOW will launch our “Confirm Her” campaign to ensure the swift confirmation of the next Supreme Court Justice. Nominated to serve as the third woman and first Hispanic on the Supreme Court in the history of the United States, Judge Sotomayor will serve the nation with distinction. She brings a lifelong commitment to equality, justice and opportunity, as well as the respect of her peers, unassailable integrity, and a keen intellect informed by experience. President Obama said he wanted a justice with “towering intellect” and a “common touch” and he found both in Judge Sotomayor.
What more do women want? We want a swift confirmation in the U.S. Senate, and Associate Justice Sotomayor to join Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Court before the Senate’s August recess….”
Sotomayer is divorce, a devout Catholic, and has no children. She has served on the board of a the Maternity Center Association (now called Childbirth Connection) which has an agenda of improving conditions for pregnant women.
The Huffy Post is thrilled. Now, see how they treated Sarah Palin.
“…The biggest gamble John McCain took in selecting Sarah Palin is that he has underestimated the intelligence of the American people. He believes this obviously bright and attractive mother of five will help him get elected. He did not seem to give much thought to the fundamental question that a President should ask when he names his VP: is she capable of being President? Can this person protect and defend the United States in an increasingly dangerous world, not only on the battlefield, but also in the conference room where diplomacy happens.
It is hard for me to make the leap from her ice float in Alaska to the international arena.
Sure, I would love to vote for a woman. I was an avid Hillary supporter who is now backing Obama. But I’m not gender blind. It’s a slight to women to expect us to vote for any woman, no matter what she stands for, and whether or not she can do the job….I was heartened this morning when the white-aproned man at the fish counter raved about how wonderful the convention was and held up the line as he told me what he thought of Sarah Palin: “It’s an insult to women.”…”
There is a site called The New Agenda, that is “dedicated to improving the lives of women”. I did an archive search and have discovered that TNA did a very good job, and still does of supporting Sarah Palin because of the fact that she is a woman, not because of politics of political party. They are giving Sotomeyer the same treatment. That’s fine.
