QUICK UPDATE: The State says SLED knows where Sanford is, and evidently he did run away – from his children – not to be near them on Father’s Day!
Let’s see Sarah Palin run away from her family on Mother’s Day. She would be FINISHED!
If Sarah Palin decided to run away and lick her numerous wounds and pout, we would never hear the end of it. She would be declared unfit to govern and what ever was left of her political career would be toast. I wonder if the same standard is going to apply to Mark Sanford, Governor of South Carolina and Chairman of the GOP Governor’s association?
Do you remember the tales about Dwight Eisenhower going missing for “X (files) number of hours” in order to fly to New Mexico to meet with the LGM’s from a UFO that landed at Holloman AFB? (I was just down in Alamo two hours ago, BTW). Well, Something is going on with Mark Sanford.
According to Adam Fogle of The Palmetto Scoop, Sanford has gone missing. I don’t think he’s out meeting UFO’s, but then South Carolina is not New Mexico. Heck, if we were talking Bill Richardson, I’d say he was either out meeting with LGMs or the North Koreans. But – we’re talking Mark Sanford, the darling of the conservative libertarian set, who has been showing some erratic behavior.
Let’s be serious a moment and we do hope that nothing is indeed wrong. They tracked his cell phone from Atlanta on Thursday and that’s it. He’s not even contacted his wife, which does raise the question of plausible denial. That said, and if he’s okay, then …. well, it is funny. I wonder if he was able to cross the street alone when he ran away?
FTS reports he’s just having a little time off to recharge his batteries after losing the stimulus fight. Can you say Temper Tantrum?
Drudge is reporting – from their headline – that something is up with Sanford. The way I read it, Sanford is having another tantrum, like the one he had when Lindsey called down the Libertarians. Looks like he’s run away to sulk.
“…His spokesman Joel Sawyer released a statement saying the governor was taking a break after losing the fight.
“Gov. Sanford is taking some time away from the office this week to recharge after the stimulus battle and the legislative session and to work on a couple of projects that have fallen by the wayside,” Sawyer said.
Sawyer wouldn’t say where Sanford was or confirm that he knew the governor’s whereabouts himself. Law enforcement officials who handle his security also declined to comment. After releasing the statement, Sawyer didn’t immediately respond to further questions about whether Sanford was keeping in touch with staff.
Sanford typically is open about his whereabouts, and his office makes no secret of time spent on vacation or out of state.
But politicians, including the lieutenant governor, said they did not know Sanford was taking time away from his office.
State Sen. Tom Davis, a Beaufort Republican, Sanford confidante and former chief of staff, said his calls to Sanford were going straight to voice mail. Calls from The Associated Press to the governor’s cell phone also went to voice mail.
Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer said he didn’t know where Sanford was but said he had not been put in charge.
Bauer spokesman Frank Adams said he had been told Sanford chief of staff Scott English was in touch with the governor. “They assure they know where he is,” Adams said.
English did not immediately respond to a message left seeking comment.
Sen. Jake Knotts, a Lexington Republican and a persistent Sanford critic, said the state needs to know where its governor is.
“The way things are in the world today and homeland security, we need the governor to be fingertips away,” Knotts said. “Somebody’s got to be in charge.”…”
Then again, maybe he is meeting with little green men.
It could happen?
