There is a difference between the cult-like worship of a political figure like Barack Obama and the racist liberal guilt support for Barack Obma, and the politics as usual.
I have nothing but contempt for the liberal and even conservatives who voted for Barack Obama simply because of the color of his skin. I have a great number of relatives who did just that, and a few who voted against him because of his skin.
I see not problem with someone who is supporting Barack Obama because he is a Democrat. It is politics as usual. They would be supporting Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Howard Dean, Bill Clinton, or the Purple People Eater. They are party people, my kindred spirits on the other side of the asile.
They are the Democrats.
They are supporting Barack Obama because he is a Democrat. They support Barack Obama the same reason I would support Mitt Romney. It’s all about politics, numbers, winning, losing, getting your person in office.
There is no ideology, no worship, no fandom – just pure hard cold polls, facts, and stats.
It is about winning and losing.
Bush was bad and Clinton was good. No harm, no foul, no insult intended, just politics, where all is fair. But what the heck, wanna get a beer after the brawl? How are the kids? I have tickets for the (insert team) you want to go? What are your plans for the weekend? Thanks for remembering my kid’s birthday.
That is politics as normal.
You’re nothing but a lying Democrat. Your candidate (insert name) is a (insert insult). You put one of those damn signs in my yard and you will (insert threat). We’re having a BBQ Saturday afternoon, you coming? Hey, look, (insert dog’s name) just lifted the leg on your yard sign! Thanks for buying the cookies from (insert name).
The world works this way.
Politics have always worked this way.
It is civilized.
It is a game for adults, best played for adults who understand how the world works.
Have I told you I think your candidate is a lying pack of (insert insult)? Did you see that catch (insert name) made last night? I have it on TVO if you missed it. We’re going to watch the debate at the bar tomorrow night, you coming?
I can’t believe you voted for that (insult profanity). You need to have your (insert insult) head examined. Did I tell you my (insult relative) is (insert event)! Can you believe it?
It doesn’t matter how vile the insult, how nasty things get, in the end rational adults – grown ups – realize they are dealing with rational adults and it is just politics. There are no curses, no threats, no violence, just good old fashion bare knuckle politics.
That is the way things SHOULD work.
Keep the ideology out of it.
You aren’t saving the world.
You are trying to get the best available men and women elected.
That’s all.
One of my best friends does not discuss politics. Her daughter, one of my “nieces” is my political god-child. Her husband is a political animal, but a Democrat. He is known as the “lyin’ Democrat” simply because it is a good insult. I think he hurls the epitaph of brain dead Republicans at us. If he’s in her shop the two of us will argue politics for hours at a time. We know the rules. It is simply politics as usual. We both detest ideological politics and cult-like politics, no matter which side.
That’s the way it should be.
When something really bad happens or I need help he and his wife are two of the first people I call. We may spend half the time arguing politics, but it’s a friendship thing. It is normal.
I can’t see how on earth he can support Obama.
He still can’t understand why I supported Bush.
We’re even. He will never vote Republican and I will never vote Democrat.
We wouldn’t want it any other way.
