2010 will go down as the year the far right threw both Ronald Reagan and William F. Buckley under the bus, by bowing down to pander to the Tea Party “patriots” and the likes of the John Birch Society. It is also be remembered as the year the Ron Paul Bots took over, and no one cared, because they are Tea Party “patriots”.
“…William F. Buckley famously denounced the John Birch Society and its founder Robert Welch in the early 1960s as “idiotic” and “paranoid. ” Buckley’s condemnation effectively banishing the group from the mainstream conservative movement. Welch had called President Dwight D. Eisenhower a “conscious, dedicated agent of the communist conspiracy” and that the U.S. government was “under operational control of the Communist party.” Buckley argued that such paranoid rantings had no place in the conservative movement or the Republican party.
Two years after Buckley’s death, the John Birch Society is no longer banished; it is listed as one of about 100 co-sponsors of the 2010 CPAC.
Why is the Birch Society a co-sponsor?
“They’re a conservative organization,” said Lisa Depasquale, the CPAC Director for the American Conservative Union, which runs CPAC. “ Beyond that I have no comment.”…”
Once upon a time CPAC was quite the place to be. Once upon a time even Lindsey Graham was welcomed, given a speaking role and applauded. That was before the era of Tea Parties and John Birchers. Once upon a time the world was different and we were not fighting the war of 100% purity.
In 2010, one will be treated to a keynote speech by libertarian Glenn Beck.
In 2003 the speaker’s list included:
Dick Cheney (Keynote)
(And nut jobs like Ann Coulter and Alan Keyes)
In 2010, the wack jobs at the John Birch Society are welcome, but gay Republicans of GOProud are treated like dirt. Frankly, I would rather hang out with the gay Republicans and treat the John Birchers like dirt. FYI – Ron Paul and the John Birch Society are tight.
Why is Ron Paul treated like a hero and men like Lindsey Graham and John McCain are not even to be seen?
“…The factual record on Ron Paul and the John Birch Society is clear, and his association with the fringe organization that made itself famous by alleging that Dwight Eisenhower was “a dedicated conscious agent of the communist conspiracy” cannot be so easily brushed aside. In October, Paul delivered the keynote address at the Society’s 50th anniversary dinner; prior to his speech he released a statement praising the “great patriotic organization.” Nor is his involvement limited to this one address. When I reported my story last year, a Birch Society spokesman told me that Paul had spoken to the group about a half dozen times over the past decade. Sorry, but this is not the stuff of Barack Obama being at a dinner in the presence of Rashid Khalidi….”
This year CPAC is a joke. It has become a dumping ground for Ron Paul Bots and John Birchers. They tea party brats are attempting to blackmail the GOP and are making things worse.
Real Republicans need an alternative. One of these days other Republicans will join Lindsey in speaking out against Ron Paul Bots. Then again, our Republicans are so busy shaking in their booties because they are so scared of the tea party brats, it is just plain frustrating.
One thing is clear. If the GOP does not get a spine and call these people out, we’re going to go down in flames in November. If we do, I blame Ron Paul, Ron Paul Bots, Tea Party Freaks, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, and FOX News.
