Would someone please explain to The Pink Flamingo why being a lobbyist is now something that should disqualify Newt? Why is being a lobbyist now something that is evil? I did the lobbying thing once upon a time. I’m not evil. In fact, my very first stop on the Hill as a lobbyist was in Newt’s basement office, when he was one of the least important people on the Hill. I did one of the first interviews of him that was not about local politics. (I have a copy of it somewhere). When I worked as a lobbyist, I worked very closely with his office.
I have spent most of my adult life working to the aim of getting someone like Newt Gingrich into the White House. There is one single reason why. Newt Gingrich is the single most stalwart supporter of a strong national space program, and a strong revived NASA that this country has ever had, save for JFK.
I attended an old L-5 conference in Houston. It was the week before Sally’s Ride. There were no women on the agenda. Those of us who had press credentials were basically insulted when we reported in at JSC. “Why does a purtty little thing like you want to cover big ole’ dirty rockets?” – Yes, that was something said to me while I was picking up my pass to cover the launch. Taking a tour of JSC, one of the more feminist minded writers was rightfully insulted when she was shown where the girls trained.
During that weekend, I ended up at the banquet table of a fairly new Congressman from Marietta, Georgia. I wanted to sit at his table, because I’d not had a chance for an interview when I was in DC a few weeks previous. The Congressional Space Caucus had just been born, and Newt Gingrich, an unknown from Marietta was one of the co-founders.
During the interview I told him about how angry a few of us were because women were being left out of the equation. He thought our idea of a Woman’s Space Network was a wonderful idea, giving it a thumb’s up, when several of the men were laughing at us. Over the years, when I needed assistance, his office was always extremely helpful.
I have spent much of my adult life fighting for a strong American presence in space. Of all the people I worked with on a political level, Newt was the one who believed most in the idea of space exploration as the greatest hope and future for the human race. It is now my fear, he may be the last hope for this nation’s future in space.
For the past 31 years of my life, I have been fighting for someone to be elected who will stand for the future. I’ll be darned if I am going to back down when we are so very close. I guess I’ve drawn my line in the sand – on the beach at KSC.
The Pink Flamingo was going to do a post about Newt Gingrich, and the attacks against him. I want to vote for Newt so bad I can’t stand it. I guess what really started me thinking about him, was when my liberal Canadian editor told me if he were an American citizen he could easily vote for Newt. I asked why. My friend told me that Newt was a thinking person and a historian. As long as he knew how to think, my liberal friend did not mind that he was so conservative.
I was planning a post today based on the attacks against Newt. Then I heard from a friend I respect. Is it possible Newt is unelectable because of his personal baggage? Heck, I know he as baggage. He has a heck of a lot of baggage. But, he is without a doubt the best person for the job.
The same thing holds true with Rick Perry, only in a different way. His baggage is the fact that he is lousy in a debate setting. I am cringing about his challenge to Nancy Pelosi to debate. She will shred him. Perry is an honest man. He just can’t debate.
Michele Bachmann is now trying to destroy Newt. Too bad she doesn’t mention her ties to Freddie. It is like her lying attacks on Rick Perry.
It has reached the point where we now look for candidates who have the least political baggage, not the most qualified. If we were looking to nominate and elect the most competent, and best qualified, we would not be dealing with the most incompetent and least qualified POTUS in the history of this nation.
Wednesday, during Michael Medved’s third hour, he was interviewing Michael Reagan. He told the story of his dad and JFK. During the 1960 campaign, the GOP had photos of JFK and his various women. When Reagan was asked if they GOP would use them, he said that they would not. Their role was not to police a candidate in the bedroom, but insure that they were the best person for the job.
It’s too bad the far right, who claims to worship Reagan, doesn’t heed his advice.
The Pink Flamingo wants to vote for Newt. This said, I would be thrilled to vote for Rick Perry. I can gladly vote for Mitt Romney or Rick Santorum. It is about finding the most electable person to defeat Barack Obama.
What is increasingly obvious is that the far right punditry and talking head world is just as much against the GOP as is the far left. They don’t give a damn about getting Barack Obama out of office. They are protecting their bottom line. It is all about the money. More and more we are learning that Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh are not about electing the best Republican for the job, but the worst possible candidate in order to pad their numbers.
What will it take for people like Ann Coulter, who is as irrational as they come, to be giving walking papers and deprived of an audience?
Where does all of this stop, when does it end? Unfortunately, the only logical answer is that we are dealing with individuals who will stop at nothing when it comes to assisting in Barack Obama’s re-election. It is obvious they care only for their own power and the sound of their own voices.
I don’t know about you, but I’m sick and tired of it all!
What went wrong within the ranks of conservatives? I think I know. It is all about greed and power. People like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, and Laura Ingraham have far more power if the GOP were to lose big in 2012. When we do, our future as a nation will grow dimmer. I do hope they can live with that. Of course, they will – quite well.
