“…As of May 26, 2012, 564 groups organized as Super PACs have reported total receipts of $218,193,761 and total independent expenditures of $114,512,852 in the 2012 cycle. See more on Outside Spending…”
One of the only reasons, at times, to vote for a Republican for POTUS, for some people, is the Supreme Court. As conservatives we have been told, repeatedly, all that is keeping us from becoming a socialist nation is the conservative court. They never mentioned that the current make-up of the Roberts’ Court, with its tendency toward the Randian, would be the ones who fired the shots that have basically destroyed America as we know it.
“A democracy cannot function effectively when its constituent members believe laws are being bought and sold.” John Paul Stevens
Once upon a time we had a representative Republic where every registered voter had a very real say in the fate of our nation. After the corruption of Watergate, campaign donations were very strictly limited. The little guy had a chance. In order to run for office and have a decent chance of winning, a candidate had to go out there and shake hands with we the unwashed masses. It didn’t matter if you were a Koch or Joe Blow, you were only allowed $2500 per person per cycle.
It was good.
We all had a voice – the same voice.
Then came Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission. The very men who we celebrated as conservatives on the court: Roberts, Scalia, Alito, and Thomas betrayed us. The very conservatives who were put on the court to allegedly protect our democracy have basically destroyed it.
Would have realized that the liberals on the court were the very ones who foresaw the disaster we are now facing?
“…A dissenting opinion by Justice Stevenswas joined by Justice Ginsburg, Justice Breyer, and Justice Sotomayor. To emphasize his unhappiness with the majority, Stevens took the relatively rare step of reading part of his 90 page dissent from the bench. Stevens concurred in the Court’s decision to sustain BCRA’s disclosure provisions, but dissented from the principal holding of the majority opinion. The dissent argued that the Court’s ruling “threatens to undermine the integrity of elected institutions across the Nation. The path it has taken to reach its outcome will, I fear, do damage to this institution.” He wrote: “A democracy cannot function effectively when its constituent members believe laws are being bought and sold.”…”
We are now a plutocracy. We the little people no longer matter. Justice Stevens was very very right.
If you read these numbers, you can blow away a heck of a lot of myths. Let’s just say the White House is being bought and paid for by financial services.
The irony is few conservatives are even complaining about this, or the manipulation of Karl Rove and the Koch Brothers. Why should they? Because of Citizen’s United, the average Republican has become little more than a cheap, dirty whore. No wait – they give cheap, dirty whores a bad name.
You won’t hear the conservative media rail against Super PACs either. They can’t. Entities within and without are paying for their daily bread. It really doesn’t matter. The way of the world, today, states that it is all about buying and selling. If you DARE complain about big money, corporations, or the rank unfairness of the tax code when it comes to the extreme rich literally getting away with paying almost nothing, well, you’re a socialist.
Maybe the Randians are wrong. The Pink Flamingo is conservative. I believe in the honor and decency of We the People, not We the Ultra Wealthy. I am sorry, but no one is more involved in the promotion of American capitalism as am I. BUT – Charles and David Koch have no right to spend more than $2500 per person, per cycle. It is wrong, it is immoral. Their billionaire boys club has no right to buy and sell candidates, so they can get what THEY want.
This is destroying the viability of our nation. We are now a plutocracy. You and I no longer matter. We’ve been betrayed by John Roberts, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Antonin Scalia. These four men – good conservatives all – have betrayed this nation. They have betrayed We the People. They have turned us into voiceless serfs. We are nothing. We are pond scum, we are nothing but the toe jam between the wealthy toes of men like the billionaire boys and their little friends.
As a nation, we are destroyed.
In many ways, we are facing our very on Götterdämmerung. Unless this court can be reigned in, can be made to see reason, or a new configuration appears, this nation is doomed. We the Little People are nothing but sewer dirt, to be squashed under the feet of vile men like Mitt Romney as he dances and prances and prostitutes himself for more please.
Please, Mr. Koch, I want some more.
The beauty of this is that absolute power corrupts absolutely. One of these days, when the election is over, and we look at the ruins of the GOP, and conservative punditry tries, once again to lie about what is going on in this nation, well, maybe something will come out of the ashes.
It is going to be bad. If you think Watergate was dirty, just wait until this election cycle is over and all of Mitt Romney and Karl Rove’s corrupt little chickens come home to roost. It will eventually happen. If not, this nation is going to be like the end of the Ring, with flames destroying everything, flames of corruption.
Oh wait, conservatives don’t approve of Wagner. I’ve reached the point where I don’t give a damn what conservatives like or dislike. They are even more corrupt than the liberals.
It’s all over folks. Thanks to conservatives honoring Ayn Rand instead of the Constitution, we have lost our Representative Republic. We’re a plutocracy, bought and paid for by the highest bidder.
Götterdämmerung – It’s all over folks!
It’s all about the gold…..
And – Thank Heaven for John McCain!
“...In their amicus brief, McCain and Whitehouse argue that the high court should either deny cert and let the Montana corporate spending ban stand or take up the case for full review. Another amicus brief filed this week by the Brennan Center for Justice, and signed by several prominent constitutional scholars, makes a similar case.
The unrestricted super PACs that have emerged in the wake of the Citizens United ruling have spent close to $100 million in this election, the Brennan Center brief notes, much of it raised in donations of $1 million or more from wealthy individuals such as casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, who with his family gave $20 million to a super PAC backing former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.).
Other groups that have filed briefs before the Supreme Court include Citizens United, the conservative group that prompted the court’s 2010 ruling to begin with and that sided with those challenging the Montana law, and the Campaign Legal Center, which was joined by more than a dozen civil rights, legal and watchdog organizations and sided with Montana….”
With the Randians in control of SCOTUS, I’m not holding my breath. The bitter irony here is that it may take a liberal court to over turn the conservative ruling, and uphold our Constitution and restore freedom to We the Little People.
