This was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy. They were haughty, and did abominable things before me; therefore I removed them when I saw it.” Ezekiel 16:49-50

Over the years the Right, Conservatives and the GOP have had a bum rap when it comes to Civil Rights.  Republicans have stood up for the rights of minorities for decades.  Then came the extremist anti-Hispanic hatred of John Tanton, and presto-chango, many on the far right turned into ranting bigots.

They are continuing this rant, now against gays and lesbians. In North Carolina, the GOP has put it into their party platform to withhold any discrimination protection from lesbians and gays.   Before The Pink Flamingo goes any farther, it has always been my observation that those who are most against gays and lesbians are usually the ones deepest in the closet.  What has happened in North Carolina is just another nail in the GOP coffin.

We’re going to be seeing a lot more of these nails as Mitt Romney and his stalwarts began to exert more and more control over the party.  There are some GOP office holders in both the House and Senate, who, off the record, say that a Romney presidency would be the end of the GOP.

“…The North Carolina Republican Party adopted a platform over the weekend that states gay, lesbian, bisexual and trangendered individuals should be excluded from anti-discrimination laws, according to Think Progress.

“Government should treat all citizens impartially, without regard to wealth, race, ethnicity, disability, religion, sex, political affiliation or national origin. We oppose all forms of invidious discrimination. Sexual orientation is not an appropriate category,” the platform (PDF) states.

The platform also calls for limiting marriage to the union of one man and one woman, and preventing same sex couples from adopting children….”

So, let’s just kill lock up put in a concentration camp destroy convert all the gays and lesbians, all the trans gendered people, all the cross dressers, drag queens, and get it over with before our young people are corrupted by their perverted way of thinking.  That’s the message that is becoming more and more prevalent.  I’ve been a Republican all my life, and have never seen the hatred that is spewing to the top of the sewer.  Then again, it makes sense.  The GOP today, has been carefully taught to hate Obama.  This is just another way to hate him.

“…During one of his recent broadcasts, which are syndicated by Spreaker Web Radio, the teen explains how he is “sickened” by watching some of his friends “turn to” homosexuality, which he says the Obama administration encourages.

“They are encouraging kids to think, ‘Well, you know what? They’re talking about being a homosexual and they’re saying there’s nothing wrong with being gay, so you know what, I think I might try that out for a little bit,” Cowger says. “That is what’s going on!”

The teen adds that the President should be urging young people to turn away from homosexuality, “a perverted belief.” Cowger added that he doesn’t believe in bullying his gay peers, but that the definition of bullying has been skewed. “When you’re trying to teach them the word of God and they consider that bullying … I find that a big problem, not being allowed to convert other people to my religion,” he said.

On his show, the teen has interviewed former GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain and John Raese, a Republican running to represent West Virginia in the U.S. Senate. Cowger identifies himself as a Pentecostal Christian on his Facebook page, where he also names Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck as role models….”

Listen to this.  It is disgusting.   It is also child abuse.  This poor, brainwashed little boy needs very real help.  He’s been taught the Bible, but he has never been taught that Christ is all about love.

What this 14 year old child does in the name of his version of  Christian faith is more a perversion than a gay kid.  This is deplorable and disgusting.  It is also tragic.  The poor child hates gays so much, that he probably is one, in the closet.  I have news for people like this.  I have friends who are gay.  They are some of the first people I contact when I need prayer.  Why?  My friends love the Lord.  They are kind, good, decent people who just happen to be in a relationship for nearly 35 years, and of the same gender.  They believe in prayer.  They believe in Christ.  They believe in Salvation.

So – what is the root of all this hate?

In many ways, this is something new.  It’s getting worse. I think it all started over gay marriage.  I’ve reached the point where I am so sick of hearing the nastiness on the far right that I agree, let people who care about one another marry.  Change the definition of marriage to that of a legal union between two consenting adults.  And, no, I do not think that marriage is a sacrament. This will annoy some of my readers, friends, and relatives, but I have enough of my Puritan ancestors in me to realize that, if you make marriage a civil union between two consenting adults, with divorce easily attainable, then you alleviate numerous problems with domestic violence.   And – no, I’m not going to hell for saying such a thing.

In the Jewish Daily Forward, Michael Gottlieb puts a different spin on things.  He thinks the far right and the Orthodox Jewish world is wrong in their opposition to same-sex marriage. I never really thought about his reasoning, but he’s right.

“…Responding to President Buchanan’s call for a national day of fasting in the wake of the Secession Crisis, on January 4, 1861, eminent Orthodox Rabbi Morris Jacob Raphall gave a thunderous sermon supporting slavery. Raphall, a New York rabbi, was a vociferous opponent of Reform Judaism. He prided himself on his profound knowledge of, and fidelity to, the Bible. The New York Times reported that in his sermon, “The learned sage [Raphall] delved deep into the Hebrew Bible — citing the books of Leviticus, Deuteronomy, Job and even Exodus — before concluding that ‘slaveholding is not only recognized and sanctioned as an integral part of the social structure… [but] the property in slaves is placed under the same protection as any other species of lawful property.’” While Raphall acknowledged that he personally found slavery distasteful, since the Bible sanctioned it, the institution was perfectly legitimate. As Raphall put it, “I grieve to find myself saying a good word for slavery, but God and the truth must prevail!”

Against Raphall rose the German-American Reform Rabbi David Einhorn, who at that time was a rabbi of a congregation in Baltimore, a pro-slavery city. On April 19, 1861, Einhorn delivered a fiery sermon attacking Raphall’s defense of slavery.

In his sermon, Einhorn lamented Raphall’s ignorance, saying that Raphall’s biblical interpretations were forced and that they ignored the fact that God created all human beings in his image, which guaranteed every individual the right to dignity and respect. Raphall’s ignorance manifested itself in his slavishness to the biblical letter: He failed to appreciate the living spirit of Judaism. Einhorn noted that while the Pentateuch spoke of slave holding, this institution gradually declined among Jews during the biblical era, and by the rabbinic period Jews rarely owned slaves. Einhorn concluded his sermon by decrying the “chillul hashem” (desecration of God’s name) committed by Jews who defend slavery. Imputing pecuniary motives to the defenders of slavery, Einhorn wrote, “Only such Jews, who prize the dollar more highly than their God and their religion, can demand or even approve of this!”

Reaction to Einhorn’s sermon was swift and brutal. A pro-slavery mob destroyed the printing press in which Einhorn regularly published anti-slavery articles, and he was driven out of Baltimore….”

We’re told that a good Christian does not approve of anything gay.  It is against God’s plan for the world.  After all, Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed because of unnatural sex acts, right?

The King's English

The problem is the fact that, the real reason Sodom and Gomorrah went down in flames was because they were haughty…they did not strenghten the hand of the poor and needy.

The King's English

If you go back to traditional Jewish sources, it is NOT about sodomy, BUT, is absolutely damning of the Randian philosophy that now perverts the GOP.

“…Rictoer Morton views classical Jewish texts as not stressing the homosexual aspect of the attitude of the inhabitants of Sodom as much as their cruelty and lack of hospitality to the “stranger”. The Jewish Encyclopedia has information on the importance of hospitality to the Jewish people. The people of Sodom were seen as guilty of many other significant sins. Rabbinic writings affirm that the Sodomites also committed economic crimes, blasphemy and bloodshed. One of the worst was to give money or even gold ingots to beggars, after inscribing their names on them, and then subsequently refusing to sell them food. The unfortunate stranger would end up starving and after his death, the people who gave him the money would reclaim it.

A rabbinic tradition, described in the Mishnah, postulates that the sin of Sodom was related to property: Sodomites believed that “what is mine is mine, and what is yours is yours” (Abot), which is interpreted as a lack of compassion. Another rabbinic tradition is that these two wealthy cities treated visitors in a sadistic fashion. One major crime done to strangers was almost identical to that of Procrustes in Greek mythology. This would be the story of the “bed” that guests to Sodom were forced to sleep in: if they were too short they were stretched to fit it, and if they were too tall, they were cut up (indeed, in Hebrew and Yiddish, the corresponding term for a Procrustean bed is a “Sodom bed”).

In another incident, Eliezer, Abraham’s servant, went to visit Lot in Sodom and got in a dispute with a Sodomite over a beggar, and was hit in the forehead with a stone, making him bleed. The Sodomite demanded Eliezer pay him for the service of bloodletting, and a Sodomite judge sided with the Sodomite. Eliezer then struck the judge in the forehead with a stone and asked the judge to pay the Sodomite.

The Talmud and the book of Jasher also recount two incidents of a young girl (one involved Lot’s daughter Paltith) who gave some bread to a poor man who had entered the city. When the townspeople discovered their acts of kindness, they burned Paltith and smeared the other girl’s body with honey and hung her from the city wall until she was eaten by bees. (Sanhedrin 109a.) It is this gruesome event, and her scream in particular, the Talmud concludes, that are alluded to in the verse that heralds the city’s destruction: “So said, ‘Because the outcry of Sodom and Gomorrah has become great, and because their sin has been very grave, I will descend and see…'”[Gen 18:20-21]

A modern orthodox position is one that holds, “The paradigmatic instance of such aberrant behavior is found in the demand of the men of Sodom to ‘know’ the men visiting Lot, the nephew of Abraham, thus lending their name to the practice of ‘sodomy’.”…”

There are some utterly stupid conservatives who think that Christians who die after voting, will to go to hell for voting for a Democrat and not repenting of the sin of voting for a Democrat.

Landover Baptist Church

“…This is not meant to be emotional or inflammatory, it is simply stating a fact and to warn. The Bible does say that if a person votes for a democrat (the promoters and supporters of sin) and were to die without repenting of that, he or she is going to hell.

I think this is an important message for blacks and hispanics who think they are Christians and who don’t want to offend God but who vote lock step for democrats….2Thess. 2:12, says that if a pro-gay marriage person were to die today with that stance, they would not go to Heaven. “Then everyone who did not believe the truth, but was delighted with what God disapproves of, will be condemned.” And one way that a person expresses that delight is: how they vote … especially if it’s for a candidate who supports gay marriage or any other sin.

Romans 1:32, “Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things* deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.” And one way we approve is by how we vote. (* “such things” are in the rest of Romans 1:18-31 – e.g. homosexuality, lesbianism, strife, deceit, slander [political sound bites], gossips, idol worshippers, God-haters, atheists – all primarily attributes of liberals.)…”

Now, I don’t see anything here about voting Democrat being a sin because they don’t want to round up all the gays and lesbians and put them in a concentration camp the way some outlandish “Christian” minister in North Carolina suggested a few weeks ago.

Gay marriage, civil unions, or culture is not going to destroy this nation.  The fabric of our country is being shattered by the far right’s devotion to Ayn Rand and her hatred of Christ, her rejection of anything Christian and of God.  Funny, how the same people who embrace Rand and her absolute evil, think that the country will be destroyed because of gays.

I have this really weird feeling that, IF those devoted to Rand, and those who preach such hate ever do make it to heaven, they might be SHOCKED to discover there are more than a few gays and lesbians there.  How could this happen?

Try reading John 3:16.

My Christ is about love.  My Christ turned His back on the important people of the world and embraced sinners.  He loved them, forgave their sins, and brought them into his fold.  He condemned the religious leaders of His day, but befriended the sinner.

Matthew 25:32-46

32All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, 33and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. 34Then the king will say to those at his right hand, “Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.” 37Then the righteous will answer him, “Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? 38And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? 39And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?” 40And the king will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.” 41Then he will say to those at his left hand, “You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; 42for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.” 44Then they also will answer, “Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?” 45Then he will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.” 46And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.

Now, this is scary.  I would rather err on the part of being kind to sinners, being kind to gays, lesbians, transgendered people, and drag queens.  I would rather show Christian kindness to sinners, pray for our leaders, and just try to live as Christ taught.  I think it is more difficult to do this because you can’t condemn people you don’t like – politically. But – Christ comes first.

P. S.  Christ is love, not hate.

P. P. S.  It looks like S & G were destroyed because they were quite wealthy and the people who lived there refused to help the poor.  If this is true, then the GOP, influenced by Ayn Rand, is in danger of destroying our nation.  If – you really want to believe the Bible!

    Jude verse 7

5 Now I want to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that Jesus, who saved[a] a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. 6 And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day— 7 just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire,[b] serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.

There is no historical evidence that Sodom and Gomorrah ever existed. They are supposed to have existed around the Dead Sea area, but when I was there all I saw was a bar of salt, which was said to be connected to one of the cities. Sometimes biblical stories are there to teach a moral lesson and are not based upon fact. According to the Bible the cities definitely engaged in sexual orgies, which were practiced in many pagan cultures. Some biblical scholars say that St. Paul’s teachings on sexuality were all about concerns of pagan practices rather than loving relationships. Jesus never mentions homosexuality in all his teachings on sexual morality, but he was very definite in his teachings on the sanctity of marriage. He performed his first miracle at a marriage celebration. Throughout the history of the Catholic Church the sacrament of marriage has always been an exclusive relationship between a man and a woman. I doubt if the church will change its teachings on this. Most catholics never receive all of the sacraments. Not all heterosexual couples can enter a sacramental marriage. Divorced people remarry and enter non-sacramental unions. This does not mean that they don’t have a loving relationship and since people don’t look down upon and degrade divorced people, who marry outside the church, they should also treat homosexuals with love, respect and justice. Jesus died for everyone’s sins and he did not exclude homosexuals. It is unfortunate that some children are being taught to hate homosexuals, but at the same time they should not be conditioned to accept and celebrate as normal pederasty and pedophilia, which is exactly what the church was guilty of when it failed to remove homosexual priests from the priesthood.
