Science, Ignorance, Stupidity, Conservatives & “Christians”

Even Pat Robertson has had enough.  You could see the impatience when he basically castigated this stupid women for asking how to deal with dinosaurs and the Bible.

The far right keeps digging themselves deeper into the black hole of ignorance to the point where The Pink Flamingo doesn’t see how they can emerged, unscathed.  Our pandering politicians have told so many lies in order to appeal to the wretches of the right, that they cannot hope to salvage anything of their reputations, not within the normal world.

Bobby Jindal and Marco Rubio are perfect examples of reasonably intelligent, well educated men who have allowed themselves to be tarred with the rank stupidity of “creation science” a contradiction in terms if ever I’ve heard one.  I will put money on the only reason they are even discussion the young earth ‘theory’ (what a joke) is to pander to the “christian” voter.

The Pink Flamingo has a problem with the so-called “christian” vote.  You will notice I use the word “christian” with a lower case C.

Paul Krugman wrote:

“...But we shouldn’t let go that easily. Reading Mr. Rubio’s interview is like driving through a deeply eroded canyon; all at once, you can clearly see what lies below the superficial landscape. Like striated rock beds that speak of deep time, his inability to acknowledge scientific evidence speaks of the anti-rational mind-set that has taken over his political party.

By the way, that question didn’t come out of the blue. As speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, Mr. Rubio provided powerful aid to creationists trying to water down science education. In one interview, he compared the teaching of evolution to Communist indoctrination tactics — although he graciously added that “I’m not equating the evolution people with Fidel Castro.” Gee, thanks.

What was Mr. Rubio’s complaint about science teaching? That it might undermine children’s faith in what their parents told them to believe. And right there you have the modern G.O.P.’s attitude, not just toward biology, but toward everything: If evidence seems to contradict faith, suppress the evidence….We are, after all, living in an era when science plays a crucial economic role. How are we going to search effectively for natural resources if schools trying to teach modern geology must give equal time to claims that the world is only 6.000 years old? How are we going to stay competitive in biotechnology if biology classes avoid any material that might offend creationists?…

So don’t shrug off Mr. Rubio’s awkward moment. His inability to deal with geological evidence was symptomatic of a much broader problem — one that may, in the end, set America on a path of inexorable decline….”

I don’t consider these people to be “Christian” in the Biblical sense of the word.  They say they are followers of Christ, but have a tendency to ignore all but what they want to read into His teachings.  It is entirely appropriate that their patron saint of founding fathers is Thomas Jefferson.  This was a man so arrogant he wrote his own version of the Bible, deleting portions he did not like.

Quite honestly, I wish I understood the descent into stupidity, but I don’t.  It is pure dumb ignorance, pigheaded ignorance.  The worst of it, is the fact that by putting a limit on creation, the very ignorant souls who claim to be protecting Christianity are the ones who are truly diminishing God.

It’s one thing to read Genesis and believe it, which I do.  It’s another to understand science, cosmology and the Big Bang.  NOTHING existed but God.  The He created the Universe.  I think it is one reason I truly love the BCP’s HR, Rite C:

Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds

God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of
glory and praise.
Glory to you for ever and ever.

At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of
interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses,
and this fragile earth, our island home.
By your will they were created and have their being.

From the primal elements you brought forth the human race,
and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us
the rulers of creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed
your trust; and we turned against one another.
Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight.

Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets
and sages you revealed your righteous Law. And in the
fullness of time you sent you only Son, born of a woman, to
fulfill your Law, to open for is the way of freedom and peace.
By his blood, he reconciled us.
By his wounds, we are healed.

And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly
chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all
those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to
proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn:

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
