Guns, Wisdom, & Solomon

Screen Shot 2013-02-01 at 12.32.29 AMIt has dawned on The Pink Flamingo that there should be required to have the same gun ownership standards  and rules as hunting. These past few months, I’ve learned a lot about hunting.  There are a tremendous number of rules and regulations for the hunting of animals.  Logic dictates that the same sort of rules and regulations be applied to guns.  It just makes sense.  The absolute bitter irony here is that there are sick, perverted and evil people who are using their guns to hunt people.  Looks to me like people should have the same fighting chance as animals.

In many ways the GOP has brought this mess on the country by austerity. Why are budgets for law enforcement, the ATF, FBI and various alphabet soup agencies being cut to the point to where in many parts of the country it is beginning to resemble the Wild West, that was never really the Wild West?  Not only are budgets for law enforcement being decimated, but funding for mental health care is almost nonexistent.  Then, we’re being subjected to libertarian demands that people be allowed to look after themselves, with subscription police agencies and fire departments.

We know that the NRA’s budget is being supplemented by gun manufacturers.  The Koch Brothers own large blocks of stock in gun manufacturers.  One can only wonder just how much stock they own in various private prisons and private law enforcement agencies. We know they are involved in the building of private prisons.

The United States leads the developed world in untreated mental illness.  We lead the developed world in child abuse. In the US, five children, each day are abused to death. The odds are it was by a family member.

  1. 14% of all men in prison were abused as children
  2. 36% of all women in prison were abused as children
  3. Children who were abused & rejected are 56% more likely to be arrested as a juvenile.
  4. 28% are more likely to be arrested as an adult
  5. 30% are more likely to commit a violent crime
  6. Parents who abuse drugs and alcohol are 3 times more likely to abuse their children
  7. 66% of people being treated for drug abuse were abused/neglected as children

“...There is an additional factor. America is the only wealthy Western democracy that abandons its children to families with no qualifications but conception. Our children are abandoned to the worst rate of poverty and governmental neglect among developed nations. Lost men and boys look for their power in the American way, through violence.

The blind rage of mass killings is a wake-up call. We have to look at the interaction of all the conditions of existence that combine to generate America’s mass killings. At present, the US is home to a vast group of predominantly white, dispossessed, enraged men. We have a political system that permits vast money at the top to hijack our politics and culture with unlimited “gifts.” Our airwaves are sold to the highest bidder. We have powerful lobbies that sell US militarism and gun ownership as refuges for dispossessed men. We have profit churning mass media with films, videos, and advertisements pushing violence as a solution to problems from intimate life to international relations. We have a dysfunctional public mental health care system. We have limited mass positive political and social movements, and no socialist power blocks to capture and channel rage at the grotesque inequality that dominates our nation and denies our young men…”

There is an unknown quantity in many of the horrific shootings we have experienced over the past few years.  It is a question The Pink Flamingo would not have even bothered asking if I had not noticed something, recently.  How many of these young men who have done these vile murders had been physically and sexually abused as children?

There is an abuse factor here that we don’t even know, and never will.  Currently, this generation of children will see 20% sexually abused by the time they start college.  That’s one in five.  When I was growing up, it was one in ten, or ten percent.  Sexual abuse SHOULD NOT lead to the survivor becoming an abuser or a child molester.  I know that from personal experience.  I also know from personal experience that it does something to a person’s very being.  Unless you have something to reach out to, have someone, something bigger than yourself, it can be the first of many causes that lead to horrific crimes like this.

The Pink Flamingo finally had time to listen to Lindsey Graham in the judiciary hearing from Wednesday.  I learned a few things, and I basically agree with him.  I had to stop and think and consider things logically.  There must be a rational answer for all of this.

I had to look up what an AR-15 was.  I have no problem with Lindsey Graham owning one.  It looks like a cool gun.  I’d love to try and shoot one.  My problem is the fact that my elbow was hurt so badly I can’t use one.  What I did not know was that many pistol and rifle magazines that have a capacity of anywhere from 9 – about 20 rounds is standard on many firearms.  I don’t see a bit of a problem with a gun having 20 rounds.  My problem is when it has much more than that.

Right now, it would take the wisdom of Solomon to wade through the propaganda that is spewing on both sides of the gun debate. I think the NRA is wrong.  We must have background checks for anyone involved in purchasing a gun or even trading one.  This is not a violation of anyone’s 2nd Amendment rights.  For anyone to even hint that it is, is dealing with serious issues themselves.  They should be the very ones not having access to a gun.

They scare me.

Aside from recreation, guns should be used for protection.  It really isn’t a stretch to see a magazine that has up to 20 bullets in it.  The old fashion guns they had in the Wild West were often ‘six shooters’.  It’s  not a stretch to go to a double or triple capacity.  Anything more than that is crazy, for the most part.

John Marshall wrote about the problems that are facing the entire issue:

“…On a separate note, in the aftermath of writing the post I referred to above I talked (though in many cases that’s way to gentle a way to put it) to a lot of people all over the gun issue. In some cases they just yelled at me. And I talked back. Except in the cases where I yelled back. That be as it may, I was interested to see that some non-trivial number of the gun diehards I talked to had never owned or in some cases even fired a gun. When asked one guy said, he didn’t own a gun, was “just interested in the liberty angle.” Others who were longtime gun owners want them all to be registered and hard to get. In some ways, like with the guy who was just into the “liberty angle” it’s clear the issue has just been subsumed into the country’s greater ideological polarization….”

There are so many rational things that can be done to put some controls on things.

  1. Just deal with the gun shows.
  2. It might help to have a combined IQ test for gun show dealers.  If the total of all the dealers is not in double digits, then they should not be allowed to open the show.
  3. Why can gun dealers be in a show that are not licensed dealers?
  4. Why not have background checks for everyone buying or trading a gun.
  5. Anyone who begins to show anti-government tendencies should have their guns removed, for their own protection.
  6. Anyone who has mental health issues in their family that is physically located within the household should have all guns removed from that household for their own protection.

We have several problems going on in the country.  First, we do need universal background checks for all gun transactions.  Those who think that we don’t are delusional.  Even personal gun trading/selling needs to be registered, with background checks.  There are two reasons for this.  FIRST:  Criminals simply have someone purchase a gun for them, then they buy the gun.  SECOND: There are vultures out there preying on senior citizens, taking their guns, giving them almost nothing for them.

The greatest problem we have in this country are idiots who are determined to start a war in this country over their precious 2nd Amendment rights.  Frankly, these are the very people I want stripped of their rights to keep a gun in their possession.  They can own them, but let a responsible party, like a law enforcement agency, or an armory keep them locked up, for their own protection.  These people aren’t rational or capable of owning guns.

Someone wrote:  If they came for your guns, do you have a responsibility to fight?  Anyone who believes this should be put on a list and be forever banned from owning a gun.  They are the ones who terrify me.  Anyone who believes this is not firing on all thrusters.   This came from an email that is being circulated by well-meaning patriots who need to get a life.

“...If they come for our guns then it is our constitutional right to put them six feet under. You have the right to kill any representative of this government who tries to tread on your liberty. I am thinking about self-defense and not talking about inciting a revolution. Re-read Jefferson ’s quote. He talks about a “last resort.” I am not trying to start a Revolt, I am talking about self-defense. If the day for Revolution comes, when no peaceful options exist, we may have to talk about that as well. None of us wants to think about that, but please understand that a majority can not take away your rights as an American citizen. Only you can choose to give up your rights….”

We have a mess here.  There are many rational things that could be done, except for the fact that we have a group of libertarian, far right, white supremacist, militia, patriot, tea party, KKK, loons who are determined to kill or be killed.  I don’t even want these people armed with a peashooter.  Anyone who is incapable of telling the difference between far right loons who are determined to start a revolution in this country, and the lies being told by the far right media has no right to have a gun.  They are not competent. The are incapable of telling the difference between fantasy and reality.

Background checks are not taking your guns away.  Neither are limits on insanely large magazines for ammunition.  Neither is preventing the mentally ill access to guns.  Right now, I’m wondering if those who are screaming the most about their 2nd Amendment rights even know what they are talking about, only spewing far right talking points to make Obama look bad.

This whole argument is just plain stupid.  It is being propelled by very greedy men who have come up with a way to make millions off your paranoid and brainwashed fear.  The NRA is making millions by catering to gun manufacturers, who are now in control of the organization.  Yes, they want to sell more guns.  That’s normal capitalism.  I’ve come to detest Randian capitalism.  It is all about making money no matter who is destroyed.  Not only do they do these individuals own massive amounts of stock in gun manufacturers but they own stock in private prisons.  They will benefit from no laws, other than that of the jungle.  They don’t care about who is killed, only making money.

There is nothing wrong with making a heck of a lot of money.  There is noting wrong with owning a bunch of guns.  There IS something wrong with worshiping those guns and turning a law written primarily to empower what was basically the beginning of our national guard into something to be considered a graven image, an idol, worshiped by idiots.

Anyone who takes this post to be a commentary against gun ownership is a total and complete fool, and is lying about the intent.  The Pink Flamingo owns a shotgun that was given to me by an old boyfriend.  Anyone who doesn’t know how to shoot straight is better off with a shot-gun. Because of a badly broken and healed elbow, I cannot fire it.  I have it, but that’s about it.  My family and I have plans to build a shooting range and skeet shooting range on some canyon property.  You think that is about gun control?  You are a fool.

We need fewer fools in this world.  If all of those universal background checks had been in effect, we would have had far fewer mass murders.  It’s that simple.

The greatest problem the GOP faces is the fact that is is now controlled by unreasonable men and women who are now no longer capable of comprehending the difference between good and evil.  They are so determined to promote their right way of thinking that they have evolved into creatures of the dark, who will lash out and destroy anyone who disagrees with them.

I DO NOT WANT THESE PEOPLE to have any 2nd Amendment rights. They are terrifying. They need to be given a chill pill, a time out, and a hug. Oh, they can have a gun, but take away their bullets, like Sheriff Andy did with Barney Fife.
