Picture 2“…On both sides of the Atlantic, the austerians seem to be freaking out. And that has to be good news, an indication that they realize, at some level, that they’re losing the debate. … Unfortunately, these people have already done immense damage, and still retain the power to do a lot more….” Paul Krugman

Alexis Tsipras is Paul Ryan’s worst enemy.  On a speaking tour of the US, as he runs for office in Greece, Tsipras is the anti-Ryan, not only Paul Ryan’s worst enemy, but the one person who could finally drive that much needed silver stake into the hellishly festered vampire heart of the undead Ayn Rand.  He is the proof that everything Rand, Alan Greenspan, and the Koch Brothers want is a total and complete, abject failure.

During the Obamacare battles where the GOP absolutely refused to even work with the Dems their reasoning included the canard that socialized medicine does not work – anywhere.  If it doesn’t work, why are the Dems trying something that is proven to be a failure.  Well, the GOP now wants to promote austerity, thanks to Paul Ryan and the devotees of Ayn Rand.  It is the only way to put this country on the right track.  We must bring painful cuts to those who can least afford it, because it will teach them a lesson. They point to Greece as a perfect example of what austerity can do for a nation.

That’s nice.  But, are they either that blind, dumb, stupid or delusional?  It has ruined Greece.  It has turned a recession in the UK into something that is nearly a depression.  The only group of individuals who profit from it are the ultra wealthy who are living like slum lords off the artificially lower tax rates that have literally destroyed the middle class, especially in Greece, and have enriched the oligarchs to the point where they have become almost like feudal lords.

Oh, wait, that’s what’s starting to happen here, because of the far right, people like Paul Ryan who do the bidding of the Koch Brothers and the libertarians who worship Ayn Rand to the point where they don’t comprehend that austerity is reverse socialism for the wealthy.  Then again, maybe they do comprehend and that’s the whole point.  The artificially lower standards, tax rates and requirements for the oligarchs in this country are giving whole new meaning to the term Welfare Kings.  Because that is what these people are – the ultimate in Welfare Kings.

“… It is impossible to resolve a crisis by removing liquidity from a receding economy. On the contrary, contractionary policies worsen the crisis, and this has been proved beyond reasonable doubt in the case of Greece. Unemployment becomes self-reinforcing, small firms close down, the economy dies out. At the same time, the steady deterioration becomes a pretext for further cuts in pay and salaries, for the removal of workers’ rights and other social safety nets, and for the transfer of public assets to private hands. The remedy thus turns out to be far worse than the disease.

The crisis will be resolved only if there is a plan for reconstructing the economy’s productive engine from below. From the labor market and the welfare state, where wages and pensions must be supported, to small businesses that demand credit lines and access to investment funding. Instead of imposing increasing tax rates on the poor and those who simply can no longer pay, what we need is an increase in public investment. Instead of tax relief for the rich, we need a just tax system. Instead of pressing the economy in the service of bankers, we need a banking system that serves society at large, that supports development. Only in this way can the vicious cycle of austerity and recession be broken, so that the social economy begins functioning again….”

Greece is falling apart, thinks to austerity.

“...Greece has become the hellish microcosm of Europe’s failed austerity policies. Politicans bargain with unscrupulous financiers as formerly middle-class people sort through garbage for food and shiver beside smoke-belching wood fires. Burdened by widespread corruption, sky-high unemployment, and plans to pay off the banks at any cost to the people, the country is headed to the breaking point…”

It does not work.  Repeat after The Pink Flamingo:  Austerity does not work.  It is a total failure, a proven failure.  Just the facts, it failed.

Austerity does not work. It is a total failure, a proven failure. Just the facts, it failed.

The Pink Flamingo has became a Paul Krugman fan.  His latest comment about austerity in Europe is quite telling:

“...Meanwhile, Olli Rehn of the European Commission, a firm advocate of austerity, responds to the disastrous economic news in Europe, which has confirmed the warnings of austerity critics and led to a widespread reassessment of fiscal multipliers; it seems that they are large in a liquidity trap, just as some of us predicted. Rehn’s answer? We need to stop putting out these economic studies, because they’re undermining confidence in austerity!…”

If we were dealing with reasonable individuals instead of the GOP, this country might have a chance.  Unfortunately, we’re not.  We’re dealing with a group of scared little white men who are bought and paid for by those determined to impose the Koch Brothers demands on all of us, no matter how many lives are ruined in the process.

I guess it’s the new way in America.
