Political Suicide Is Painless

imagesYou may or may  not be familiar with the classic, iconic theme from M*A*S*H (arguably the 2nd greatest comedy ever – Lucy being the first).  The theme song is entitled Suicide is Painless.  According to the film’s director, Robert Altman, it had to be the ‘stupidest song ever written‘.  Legend has it, Altman tried lyricists to write it, but they couldn’t come with anything stupid enough.  He tried.  Finally, his 14-year-old son, Michael, wrote the lyrics in five minutes.  Altman also told Johnny Carson that his son earned over a million dollars in royalties, while he made only about $70K for directing the movie.

Yep, that sounds like today’s GOP.

Through early morning fog I see
visions of the things to be
the pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see…
that suicide is painless
it brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.
I try to find a way to make
all our little joys relate
without that ever-present hate
but now I know that it’s too late, and…
The game of life is hard to play
I’m gonna lose it anyway
The losing card I’ll someday lay
so this is all I have to say.
The only way to win is cheat
And lay it down before I’m beat
and to another give my seat
for that’s the only painless feat.
The sword of time will pierce our skins
It doesn’t hurt when it begins
But as it works its way on in
The pain grows stronger…watch it grin, but…
A brave man once requested me
to answer questions that are key
is it to be or not to be
and I replied ‘oh why ask me?’
‘Cause suicide is painless
it brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.
…and you can do the same thing if you please.

That is  today’s version of the House GOP, drunk, suicidal, irrational, and out of their minds with abject stupidity.  It is abjectly self-destructive, when we’re now looking at something like 88% of the American people against this action.  In fact, on Monday morning, the US Chamber sent letters to all members of Congress, telling them they did not want the government shut down and wanted the debt ceiling raised.  That’s something like 250 organizations.  THEY VOTE & they donate money, primarily to Republicans – or once upon a time they did.

This list is devastating.  It is also quite revealing in that the only major players left out of the list are those connected to the Koch Brothers and Koch Industries.  Evidently, the drunks of the House of Representatives no longer care about constituent service and are only about doing that the Koch Brothers, Jim DeMint, and the Heritage Foundation tells them to do.  Oh, wait, they are one in the same.

These people don’t give a damn that a government shut-down would immediately furlough something like 40% of the federal workforce today.  It will cost the US economy hundreds of millions of dollars, daily.  It will basically destroy what little economic recovery we have had.  According to record, the US Chamber of Commerce spent about $30 million in 2012 supporting GOP candidates who are now betraying the country.  Evidently the Kochs can make up for that amount, easily.

Part of this rebellion is being led by Ted Cruz (R-Canada), Rand Paul (R-KKK Land) and so forth and so on.  They are leading from behind, from a true fear of the fact that Obamacare may just work.  If it works, then they are DOA.    According to Paul Krugman, the debt hitting the debt ceiling will push us back into a recession.

Several of us keep trying to figure out what is going on here.  Why on earth would the far right, tea party members of the House, do something that is almost treasonous, basically destroying the GOP in the process?  There are reports that only a few Republicans actually want a shut-down fight.  If this is true, then the other GOP members of the House are abject cowards. We all know the jerks leading the fight include Michele Bachmann (R-Hades).  Harry Reid is calling them Banana Republicans.  The rest of the country is calling them childish cry-babies. In fact, CNN reports that 69% of the American people think the House Republicans are acting like spoiled children.

This will not end well for the GOP.  It should also be noted that while I am no longer using clip art of the noble elephant, once proud mascot of the Republican party, and I am using photos of skunks, no insults are intended toward the fine stalwart members of their species.  I am simply using the analogy of how badly they small.

There is only one possible explanation for why this is being done.  The Koch Brothers want the GOP destroyed so they can bring forth a new and glorious libertarian party.  It ain’t gonna happen.  Republicans aren’t going to go libertarian.  They’ll go independent, but never libertarian.
