What do you do with an alleged ‘Marxist’ pope who takes the teachings of Christ so seriously that he goes out, hangs with the homeless, upsets Rush Limbaugh, and invites the poor to dinner? Yikes!
16 Then someone came to him and said, ‘Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?’ 17And he said to him, ‘Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. “...One cause of this situation is found in our relationship with money, since we calmly accept its dominion over ourselves and our societies. The current financial crisis can make us overlook the fact that it originated in a profound human crisis: the denial of the primacy of the human person! We have created new idols. The worship of the ancient golden calf (cf. Ex 32:1-35) has returned in a new and ruthless guise in the idol- atry of money and the dictatorship of an imper- sonal economy lacking a truly human purpose. The worldwide crisis affecting finance and the economy lays bare their imbalances and, above all, their lack of real concern for human beings; man is reduced to one of his needs alone: con- sumption….” #55 Pope Francis

This imbalance is the result of ide- ologies which defend the absolute autonomy of the marketplace and financial speculation. A new tyranny is thus born, invisible and often virtual, which unilaterally and relentlessly imposes its own laws and rules. Debt and the accumulation of interest also make it difficult for countries to realize the potential of their own economies and keep citizens from enjoying their real purchasing power. To all this we can add widespread corruption and self-serving tax evasion, which have taken on worldwide dimensions. The thirst for power and possessions knows no limits. In this system, which tends to devour everything which stands in the way of in- creased profits, whatever is fragile, like the envi- ronment, is defenseless before the interests of a deified market, which become the only rule….” #56 Pope Francis
“...Behind this attitude lurks a rejection of ethics and a rejection of God. Ethics has come to be viewed with a certain scornful derision. It is seen as counterproductive, too human, because it makes money and power relative. It is felt to be a threat, since it condemns the manipulation and debasement of the person. In effect, ethics leads to a God who calls for a committed response which is outside the categories of the market- place. When these latter are absolutized, God can only be seen as uncontrollable, unmanage- able, even dangerous, since he calls human beings to their full realization and to freedom from all forms of enslavement. Ethics – a nonideological ethics – would make it possible to bring about balance and a more humane social order. With this in mind, I encourage financial experts and political leaders to ponder the words of one of the sages of antiquity: “Not to share one’s wealth with the poor is to steal from them and to take away their livelihood. It is not our own goods which we hold, but theirs”...” #57 Pope Francis
It is quite beautiful, and very exciting. It is very much NOT Marxist. It’s basically Christian. This makes me wonder just what people like Rush Limbaugh believe. They certainly don’t recognize the teachings of Christ.

The more time I spend listening to Pope Francis, the more I like him.
“...The Gospel joy which enlivens the com- munity of disciples is a missionary joy. The sev- enty-two disciples felt it as they returned from their mission (cf. Lk 10:17). Jesus felt it when he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and praised the Father for revealing himself to the poor and the little ones (cf. Lk 10:21). It was felt by the first converts who marvelled to hear the apostles preach- ing “in the native language of each” (Acts 2:6) on the day of Pentecost. This joy is a sign that the Gospel has been proclaimed and is bearing fruit. Yet the drive to go forth and give, to go out from ourselves, to keep pressing forward in our sow- ing of the good seed, remains ever present. The Lord says: “Let us go on to the next towns that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out” (Mk 1:38). Once the seed has been sown in one place, Jesus does not stay behind to ex- plain things or to perform more signs; the Spirit moves him to go forth to other towns…” #21
As if to prove Pope Francis right, and Rush Limbaugh wrong, companies that pay higher taxes create more jobs than tax evaders! Now that’s capitalism!
