NOTE: I am featuring a photo of Pope Francis because I can’t stand looking at Phil Robertson.
I admit, I’m getting tired of using the word ‘stupid’ to describe the conservative world. But – gosh darn it, stupid is as stupid does, and the far right world is once again behaving stupidly. It is defined as a lack of intelligence, understanding, wit, reason, or sense. Synonyms include: unintelligent, ignorant, dense, foolish, dull-witted, slow, simpleminded, vacuous, vapid, idiotic, imbecilic, imbecile, obtuse, doltish. It is also defined as not sensible or logical. Jung once said that ‘it requires no art to become stupid.’ Yep, stupid is the best way to describe the conservative world.
The far right wants to boycott A&E for suspending the truly repulsive looking, animal killing, gun loving, bigot. It is terribly revealing. Evidently it is fine to say truly repulsive things about gays and lesbians and suggest blacks were happier when they lived until social and cultural apartheid. That rises to the level of a boycott. But – when Pope Francis wants to promote the Gospel of Christ, why he’s a Marxist.
“…All you have to do is look at any society where there is no Jesus. I’ll give you four: Nazis, no Jesus. Look at their record. Uh, Shintos? They started this thing in Pearl Harbor. Any Jesus among them? None. Communists? None. Islamists? Zero. That’s eighty years of ideologies that have popped up where no Jesus was allowed among those four groups. Just look at the records as far as murder goes among those four groups….” Phil Robertson
That paragraph should be enough to get anyone fired!
They’re calling it a new culture war. If that’s what the culture of the far right is, today, please, count me out, and quickly. The National Organization for Marriage thinks the man is a saint. Oh, the liberal who are against the holy man of God are anti-gun bullies, atheists, and dare attack one of the nation’s most famous Christians. Erick Erickson said that gays are evil.
“...The gay lobby bullies are at it again. This time they’ve attacked one of the most popular Christians in America — Phil Robertson, patriarch of Duck Dynasty’s Robertson family. They are calling him “vile” and say he is pushing “extreme stereotypes” and “lies.” The grossly misnamed Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and their Hollywood ally GLAAD have demanded that Phil be punished and, incredibly, Wednesday night A&E succumbed to the gay bullies and suspended Phil Robertson! …”
BUT…. the same bunch is constantly attacking Pope Francis, the world’s most popular Christian.
We’re being treated to wholesale hysteria on the part of the right, from Glenn Beck, to Rush Limbaugh, FOX NEWS to the usual suspects. Beck thinks the attack on the truly repulsive bearded Osama Bin Laden look alike Phil Robertson is fascism. I guess one person’s good taste is another person’s fascism. Then again, Glenn Beck ought to know a heck of a lot about fascism, considering he fools around with it on a daily basis.
“…“He makes me a little concerned on his Marxist tendencies,” he explained. “When you’re not on prepared remarks, Marxism starts to creep into your language. When you’re asked questions by people, you start to say, ‘Look, I don’t want to hurt you, I just think that redistribution of wealth isn’t so bad.’ – Glenn Beck on Pope Francis
Rush Limbaugh on Pope Francis:
“…“Pope Francis attacked unfettered capitalism as ‘a new tyranny’ and beseeched global leaders to fight poverty and growing inequality, in a document on Tuesday setting out a platform for his papacy and calling for a renewal of the Catholic Church. … In it, Francis went further than previous comments criticizing the global economic system, attacking the ‘idolatry of money.'” I gotta be very careful. I have been numerous times to the Vatican. It wouldn’t exist without tons of money. But regardless, what this is, somebody has either written this for him or gotten to him. This is just pure Marxism coming out of the mouth of the pope. Unfettered capitalism? That doesn’t exist anywhere. Unfettered capitalism is a liberal socialist phrase to describe the United States. Unfettered, unregulated. …”
Let’s get this straight, Glenn Beck, who thinks Pope Francis is a Marxist for wanting to hold business and big money accountable, wants to take out a business, a corporation, exercising its freedom to program what they want. Who knew that the freedom of business, of marketing, of a corporation to kick the heck out of a vile little bigot like Pat Robertson who was allegedly exercising his bigoted First Amendment rights, is fascist.
Let’s get this straight, and we are going to need a scorecard:
- Corporate Freedom = Pure & Wholesome
- Pope Francis = Marxist for suggesting they need to be held accountable, financially.
- Corporate America fires conservative icon = Fascist
Okay, I get it, I finally get it. When someone says something the far right doesn’t like they are demonized as commies, pinkos, Marxist, Stalinist. When someone the far right idolizes is held accountable by institutions worshiped by the far right, those institutions become fascists.
I think I get it. Glenn Beck wants to protect Phil Robertson’s First Amendment rights by destroying the freedom of corporate America to do what they think is good for business. It makes perfect sense. As long as corporate America does exactly what Glenn Beck wants, they are worth protecting from the evil, Marxist Pope Francis. Pope Francis is an evil Marxist because he thinks that people should have rights, be treated honorably and decently, and people should be held accountable for what they do.
Because that violates Glenn Beck’s sensibilities and sense of fair play, Pope Francis is basically evil and undeserving of being Time’s Man of the Year. That’s not all, Beck basically called Time fascist and compared the new pope to Hitler.
“…“Now maybe Time magazine just didn’t want the controversy, but I don’t buy that at all. They love the controversy. The reason why they didn’t pick Ted Cruz is because they don’t want to give him any more power,” Glenn concluded. “I mean… they did make Hitler and Mussolini the man of the year. Now, Hitler [wasn’t] man of the year in a positive way, but Mussolini [was]. Remember, progressives are fascists… They considered Assad. But I can tell you right now, they may have put Ted Cruz in the little pool to have his name looked at, but nobody seriously considered him… And he’s the guy who’s going to effect our life, your life, much more than anybody else.”…”
One must assume that Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Bobby Jindal, Sarah Palin, Ted Cruz, Sean Hannity, Erick Erickson, Ralph Reed, Megan Kelly and so forth and so on think that Phil Robertson’s remark that black people were happier living under Jim Crow segregation laws had nothing to do with getting canned. Evidently they, too think that blacks would be better off under segregation. We know that a whole bunch of Glenn Beck’s John Birch Society friends think just that. I guess he does, too.
It’s anti-Christian bigotry when Phil Robertson is fired but just fine when the same bunch slams Pope Francis as a Marxist.
So, let’s recap what we know so far. Glenn Beck thinks that Pope Francis is basically a Marxist because he wants to help the poor and hold the corporate world accountable. Beck doesn’t want the corporate world held accountable for anything until they dare become all fascist and fire a truly disgusting bigot. Okay, I finally get it. Pope Francis, who truly is living up to the reputation of St. Francis, is bad because he wants to help people, but Phil Robertson is to be hailed a hero because he hates gays, lesbians, and wants to re-segregate the world.
“…”If you believe in free speech or religious liberty, you should be deeply dismayed over the treatment of Phil Robertson. Phil expressed his personal views and his own religious faith; for that, he was suspended from his job. In a free society, anyone is free to disagree with him, but the mainstream media should not behave as the thought police censoring the views with which they disagree.”..” Ted Cruz
Matthew Yglesias wrote:
“…“…As Slate’s Matthew Yglesias pointed out on Thursday, the First Amendment right guarantees freedom of speech, but it does not guarantee employment as a reality TV star. “The only relevant First Amendment issue here is that A&E has a constitutional right to make its own decisions about what kind of programming it wants to air,” Yglesias noted. “The First Amendment very much does not prevent private firms from declining to air certain kinds of content that they think will alienate their audience, or private citizens from engaging in organized criticism of private broadcasters who don’t bend to their will.”…”
The real discussion is should A & E have fired him. I say, can ahead. What I do find fascinating is that the discussion is about what the bigoted jerk said about gays and not about blacks and segregation. Let’s just put the charming little bigot in a white sheet and pointy head and tell him to have at it. Paula Dean had her career ruined for even less than this.
“…“I never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person. Not once. Where we lived was all farmers. The blacks worked for the farmers. I hoed cotton with them. I’m with the blacks, because we’re white trash. We’re going across the field,” Robertson said. “They’re singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, ‘I tell you what: These doggone white people’—not a word!… Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare, you say: Were they happy? They were godly; they were happy; no one was singing the blues.”…”
The worst thing is what Mollie Hemingway wrote in The Federalist:
“...Some people hold the doctrinal view that homosexuality, adultery and swindling are sinful. Others hold the doctrinal view that homosexuality, adultery and swindling are not sinful. If you’re talking about whether something is or is not a sin, you’re talking doctrine. In this regard, it’s not just Phil Robertson who is talking about his personal doctrinal views. Some self-awareness is in order….”
In other words, if we think that gays have a right to exist and not be treated vilely, we agree that swindling is not sinful. Does Hemingway want to stone those have sinned, to death, the way the Christian Reconstructionist want to do? I guess what Erick Erickson tweeted made sense:
“…Personally, I’ve always taken comfort in the idea of hell fire — that God truly is just and the unrepentant will be in for a smiting…”
FYI, Phil Robertson also said that Shintoism is a religion that leads to murder.
“Shinto…also kami-no-michi, is the indigenous spirituality of Japan and the people of Japan. It is a set of practices, to be carried out diligently, to establish a connection between present-day Japan and its ancient past….”
That statement is enough to have managed to get him canned. The best part, the whole show is a fake. Their appearances are fake. Their lives are fake. All for money.
