Grazing Permits, Fake Ire & Free-loading Ranchers

Screen Shot 2014-04-11 at 11.07.09 PMIsn’t it amazing how there is almost always a Koch in the woodpile when there’s trouble here in this country? Yep, Americans for Prosperity are helping rancher Cliven Bundy rip-off the BLM, and try to get something for nothing.  One wonders if they are even helping to promote the situation with the militias.  Sean Hannity and the usual suspects are in on it,a s is Dana Loesch.

In 1998 a federal judge ordered Nevada rancher and bust-head Cliven (Al) Bundy to remove his cattle from lands where they were trespassing.  Finally, about a  year ago, another order was issued.  By this time Bundy owed well over a million bucks to the BLM (that’s we the taxpayer) for using for free, what just about every other non-bust-head rancher in the west is required to pay to use.  Last week, the BLM began rounding up his 908 head of cattle, which had been grazing without a permit since 1999.  Now, elsewhere, in the real world, where bust-heads like Bundy aren’t members of the militia or far right Glenn Beck, Alex Jones, FOX News watching freaks, when you owe the feds a million bucks, the feds take that million bucks, or else.

But – evidently Clive Bundy and his family are different.  Because the family has had grazing rights to the land, for well over a century, he says he owns the 600,000 acre Gold Butte property.  Now, though, the militia is arriving, and they are well armed.  Charlie Daniels has tweeted that he wonders if this is the first run in the militia’s rebellion against the evil empire. Bust-headed militia members are allegedly on their way from Virginia, Texas, Montana, Idaho, and Wisconsin, along with the People’s United Mobile Armed Services.  The Oath-Keepers are also involved.

According to the SPLC:

“…The core of the dispute is Cliven Bundy’s ongoing claim to the right to graze his cattle on a sensitive piece of southern Nevada’s Mojave Desert known as Gold Butte. Bundy’s family had grazed cattle in the area for generations, but in 1993 Cliven Bundy stopped paying his fees on the land, claiming that the United States government was not the legitimate landlord.

In 2013, a federal judge enjoined him from continuing to graze his cattle on the federal lands, an order he has studiously ignored. So this week, federal authorities moved into the area and began sweeping up Bundy’s trespassing cattle.

Bundy threatened a “range war” if Bureau of Land Management agents took custody of his stock, calling them “cattle thieves.” But, initially at least, the threats appeared to fizzle as the roundup of Bundy’s cattle proceeded apace, accompanied by a heavy law enforcement presence at the scene, while Bundy sputtered helplessly on the sideline. On Sunday, another adult son, 37-year-old David Bundy, was arrested after getting into a confrontation with the federal officers; afterwards, Bundy and his compatriots described for reporters their alleged ordeal the hands of federal officers.

BLM officials, meanwhile, defend the crackdown on Bundy’s activities by noting that he is the only rancher in the region who refuses to acknowledge or heed the federal permit system for grazing rights. “Cattle have been in trespass on public lands in southern Nevada for more than two decades. This is unfair to the thousands of other ranchers who graze livestock in compliance with federal laws and regulations throughout the West,” the BLM website noted….”

It seems that, according to Bundy, since his Mormon ancestors were using the land before the BLM, they have a god-given right to use it now, for free, thumbing his nose at the other ranchers who are doing things legally.

In fact, Cliven Bundy even threatened his neighbor, Orville Cattoor for assisting in the removal of his cattle.  He is threatening a range war against the Cattoor family.  Anyone who knows the history of the west, knows that a range war is about killing those who go against you.

They are basically planning an armed uprising against the Federal government.

I live in the middle of cattle country in the wilds of New Mexico. Unfortunately, that’s not how ranchers see it.  Having come from the East, where my father and grandfather paid good money for the land they used to graze cattle, it’s about arid land that should not be supporting cattle.  it takes a section of land (600 acres) to support one cow.  In order to support a large herd and keep a ranch profitable, large acreage grazing permits have been deeded to ranchers for well over a century.  They pay a small fee, per head, and that’s it.  They think it is their right, to have access to federal land, because they have always had it.

If you look at it from the point of view of having a grandfather milk 600 head of cattle via 2500 acres or so in Florida, it’s not quite fair for the farmer in the east who must either rent or own the land they use.  Unfortunately – the rancher in the west doesn’t see it that way.  Mention to these stalwart conservatives that they are taking ranch welfare and they become a little  hostile.  There is no rational solution. They think it is their right to basically have thousands of acres – nearly for free, while other people must pay for it.

Isn’t it funny how, once the clarion call of liberal government has been issued, the usual suspects all gather round, to fight the evil feds, no bothering to even get their facts straight?  Will they ever change?  None of this really matters though. Intimidated by the show of crack-pot force, the BLM decided to let Bundy have his way.  In doing so, they have trampled on the rights of thousands of law-abiding ranchers who have paid their grazing fees, year after year.  More importantly, they’ve now proven if the insane militia types are violent enough, they will get their way.  It is a terrifying precedent.  One wonders what they’re going to try next – hold Neil Tyson hostage until they get equal time to prove how the sun revolves around the earth?

NOTE TO FAR RIGHT ANTI-SCIENCE IDIOTS:  The sun does not revolve around the earth, which is not flat.  Evolution does exist.  And – people really did walk on the moon.  I’ve met a couple of them.

On Wednesday, more about the culture and reality of ranching verses Hollywood.
