Climate Change Dingbats on the Left & on the Right

Why the hysteria?

It’s about the Pine Island Glacier:

If you have been following the news, to quote a certain gold android, “We’re doomed.”  Due to global warming, the Antarctic ice cap is melting at such a rate, it will never, never, never be able to bounce back from disaster.  Humans are to blame.  As the ice cap melts, the sea level will rise.  It is devastating.  The world is coming to an immediate and abrupt end.  Global warming advocates are joyful.  They are right.  The right is wrong.

Right?

“...Since the 2007 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fourth Assessment Report, new observations of ice-sheet mass balance and improved computer simulations of ice-sheet response to continuing climate change have been published. Whereas Greenland is losing ice mass at an increasing pace, current Antarctic ice loss is likely to be less than some recently published estimates. It remains unclear whether East Antarctica has been gaining or losing ice mass over the past 20 years, and uncertainties in ice-mass change for West Antarctica and the Antarctic Peninsula remain large. We discuss the past six years of progress and examine the key problems that remain….”

Oh, it is a horrible story, oft repeated by the left, and laughed at by the right. It is abject disaster.  I have found a rebuttal by Larry Hamlin, but can find little information about him.  What I do know is there is a tremendous amount of hyperbole and conflicting information.

“…In 2008 the United Nations claimed that by 2010 there would be between 50 million to 200 million climate refugees from low lying areas of the Caribbean and Pacific due to rising sea levels. That never happened so the U.N. attempted to hide the fact it ever made such a claim by moving the end date for this preposterous projection to 2020…”

In the study of the melting and movement of the glacial action, the following is noted:

“…The physical processes responsible for the change in coupling are unknown at this time. They could be due to oceanic changes [Jacobs et al., 2011, 2012], to the calving of the main ice tongue in 2010 [MacGregor et al., 2012], or to mechanical failure of the ice mélange. For instance, warmer waters beneath the ice shelf would melt the ice tongue faster, reduce back stress from the main glacier, and entrain speedup, which would significantly affect the mechanical rigidity of the mélange between the TEIS and the main ice tongue. After 2008, the TEIS accelerated again, but a restoration of the coupling between the two ice shelves seems unlikely as the main ice tongue calved in 2010. The recent acceleration might be better explained by a reduced buttressing of the pinning point at its terminus [Tinto and Bell, 2011; MacGregor et al., 2012] and/or the retreat of its grounding line due to enhanced thinning caused by warmer ocean water. This behavior requires further investigation using numerical modeling. It illustrates the important role of the TEIS in the overall evolution of Thwaites Glacier. The observations also indicate that changes in ice dynamics of Thwaites Glacier are just as significant as those of Pine Island Glacier. Thwaites Glacier is, however, 120 km wide and not confined in a valley [Fretwell et al., 2013], hence with the potential for a much larger increase in ice flux if the flow acceleration continues at the same pace….”

Nothing in the article is preaching the gloom and doom you are seeing in the media.  There is nothing about rising sea levels, just a study about the melting and movement of the glaciers – due to some sort of thermal action below the glaciers – in the water.  The study is basically much ado about nothing.  They do not mention the real problem of why the ice is melting – and it is NOT about climate change.  It is, though, about global warming, very real geo-thermal global warming.

Volcanoes….

“…“Underwater volcanism is also sublimating portions of the Antarctica ice mass from underneath. In 2004, a research team led by Eugene Domack, aboard the research vessel Lawrence M. Gould, made a remarkable discovery of a massive underwater volcano off the coast of Antarctica using a deep water submersible vehicle equipped with a cadre of sensors and video cameras. The volcano was 2300 feet (700 meters) tall. The British team findings confirmed the volcano was still active and was contributing to the melting of the ice sheet from beneath the Antarctica land mass.”…”

It is about volcanic activity, not man-made climate change.  There are idiots among us who say that global warming causes volcanoes to erupt.  They are as insane sounding as those on the far right who think the planet is a couple thousand years old.  There is no different between the two, only the religion is different.
