The Raw Story is reporting that an Egyptian cleric has said that men can spy on women who are showering, if they have pure intentions. If a man is interested in marrying a woman, he should be able to spy on her, to see what he needs to see, before marriage. Then, I gather, if he doesn’t like what he sees, he can refuse to marry her.
I don’t have a problem with chastity, which is avoiding sexual activity, for a time or a life-time. There is nothing at all wrong with it. The problem is the emphasis on ‘purity’, which is completely different.
“…That which is holy is by definition pure – free from defilement by various impurities. However not all pure objects are holy – common everyday objects are pure as long as they have not contacted a source of impurity or have been cleansed from such contact. And being pure, theyare candidates for sanctification – being transferred or dedicated to God so as to be holy, but without such a consecration and removal from common use they are merely pure and not holy…” Christine Hayes
There is even a prayer for ‘purity. I don’t know about you, but I find the prayer terribly disturbing, on so many levels – and it is not about sexual purity. It reeks of, thank you God, that I am better than all those impure sinners out there, and women who aren’t as self-righteous as I am.
“...Lord, I love You and I want to please You. Thank You for loving me and for providing this opportunity to come into Your presence. I know that You honor Your Word and Your Word says, that if I confess my sins, You are faithful and just to forgive me of my sins. So right now, I thank You for filling me with Your Spirit and I humbly ask that you forgive me for my thoughts and actions that have grieved Your Spirit. I desire to live a life of purity and I want my very being to be aligned with Your Word.
I know that I am unable to live a life of purity without Your help, so I ask that You lead, guide and direct me in Your ways. Thank you for giving me the freedom of choice, but please help me to make wise choices in every area of my life. Despite what the world says is acceptable, help me to see sin as You see sin. Make me uncomfortable in my sin and in the things that displease You.
Lord, Your Word says, if I love You, I will obey You, so from this day forward I choose to honor and obey You. I want to live for You and I surrender my life and my will to You. Mold me into the woman of God You are calling me to be. No longer will I be bound by my past mistakes and failures. I am walking forward in the newness of life.
Lord, I don’t want to be selfish in my prayer for purity because I know I’m not the only one struggling to live a life of purity, so I pray not only for my purity but for the purity of others. Please help me not to cause anyone else to stumble. Also, help me to be an example of Your love and grace. Remind me of Your forgiveness that I may not judge others, but offer an encouraging word when they stumble.
I pray that the world will be drawn to You and seek to live a life of purity, Holy unto You and let it start with me. I want to stand boldly for you Lord, so please give me strength to stand when I’m weak. Speak to my heart and help me to recognize temptation and flee it. Make me more like You that I may be used for Your Glory.
I, Your daughter, offer this prayer for purity and restoration unto you as humbly as I know how….”
Just like everything else Christian Reconstruction, the far right, Christian right, patriarchy, and so forth and so on make a big deal about, is not that much of an issue in the Bible. If you do a study on the word “pure” you will find most of it deals with minerals, fabrics, incense, and actual physical items. Very little is about sexual purity. There is something like a total of 4 verses in the entire Bible that deal with sexual purity – FOUR. Sure, it is a virtue, but in the way of things sexual, fornication was NOT a sin. Adultery was. Chastity, which is the avoidance of sexual activity is not mentioned in these circles. There’s a very good reason for this. How many godly leaders of the godly Christian Reconstruction movement are ‘chaste’?
Part of the very real problem is the strange ideas godly patriarchal fathers have about controlling their daughters.
“...I obviously don’t accept the idea (the map) that says that a daughter’s virginity belongs to her father. A father doesn’t answer for the sins of his daughter or his wife. A woman’s body is her own until she marries, though the New Testament does tell us that one’s body is shared by one’s spouse and one’s self after marriage – not as a possession but as a function of being “one flesh” (1 Cor 7). The idea that a father can actually do anything to preserve his daughter’s virtue is an illusion. What if someone has taken that girl’s virginity against her will, unbeknownst to that father? Statistics indicate that one in three or four girls has been sexually abused in some way before age eighteen. I’m grateful that this trend didn’t come along until I was well out of my parents’ home…”
Implied within this ‘culture’ is the fact that a daughter’s body belongs to her father. Sure, once upon a time, in a more primitive era, women, children, property – everything literally belonged to the lord and master. This concept went out with feudalism. At least it did everywhere but in the perverted world of Bill Gothard and the formerly tainted world of Doug Phillips. A woman’s body belongs to no one but herself. The says of feudalism and slavery are long gone – everywhere but for the godly daughters of godly fathers who are practicing emotional incest – at the very least.
