Evidently Vladimir Putin can do nothing right in the eyes of the American press, having been subjected to a full court, Michael Moore style Canadian Bacon propaganda extravaganza making the Russian leader the world’s worst person. He’s not. Fact is, the Ukranians we are supporting are some very nasty individuals. Their ranks include modern day, real neo-Nazis, but so what? It’s better to support Nazis than admit Putin was right, all along, right?
So, when he caused an international scandal by ‘flirting’ with the First Lady of China, he was damned for being a flirt?
“…State broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) caught the whole encounter on video. Peng and Putin cut small figures from the camera’s distant perch across the vast Water Cube, but the CCTV commentator had no trouble making out their identities. She remarked upon Putin’s chivalrous gesture just moments later, saying, “Putin has just placed his coat around Peng Liyuan’s body.” Major Chinese news outlets including web giant Sina and Phoenix Media quickly posted the video, which also began circulating on Chinese social media. The encounter even spawned a short-lived hashtag, “Putin Gives Peng Liyuan His Coat,” on Weibo, China’s Twitter-like microblogging site….”
Oh the scandal, or the shame. Chinese censors stepped in to scrub the web of the image of a Vlad being – oh how horrible – a gentleman? To make matters worse, Barack Obama, who was having a nicotine attack, as chewing nicotine gum. What’s a world leader to do? They were to smoke in the eyes of world leaders, and let the woman be cold – right?
Once upon a time, when a man put a shawl around the shoulders of a lady, it was the hallmark of a gentleman. Now, evidently, it something to be viewed with derision and suspicion. Let’s be honest here, in our world today, there are very few remaining gentlemen, be them former KGB agents, world leaders, or just some guy off the street. The whole ghastly scandal can be seen here. Oh, yes, something was terribly wrong. The man acted like a gentleman. Nothing to see, really. No flirting, just a former KGB agent, now a powerful leader, being a gentleman.
Once upon a time, long ago in a galaxy far away, when Nixon first opened diplomatic relations with China, something like Shawlgate might have been a terrible faux pas. That was a heck of a long time ago, well over 40 years. Today, though, China is rushing to be as western as are we. The problem is they are involved in anti-scandals right now. This had the look of ‘sin’ one must assume. One must also assume we now live in a world where such gestures are no longer acceptable. I don’t want to live in that world. I like gentlemen and gallantry.
Scuttlebutt is Putin is suffering from inoperable pancreatic cancer and could be terminal.
