“…Today’s immigrant children are tomorrow’s workers, taxpayers and neighbors. Condemning them to life in the shadows means that they will have less stable home lives than they should, be denied the opportunity to acquire skills and education, contribute less to the economy, and play a less positive role in society. Failure to act is just self-destructive….” Paul Krugman
In a way, that’s all we need to know. Barack Obama finally has his groove back, thank goodness! It’s about time. After a season of floundering around, plummeted by both the left and the right, his own party basically betraying him at the polls, he has managed to turn it around with just two speeches, and some very courageous actions. The worst part of this is those actions, which are the sign of an imperial presidency, were pushed on him because of the actions of the GOP House. This is NOT a discussion about the good and bad aspects of an imperial presidency. Thought I don’t mind admitting I have no problem with it. Life in this country is far too polarized, politically for anyone holding that office to even remotely be a success unless they morph into one. It has taken Barack Obama six years to figure it out. Makes me wonder what took him so long.
The poor man has been battered and bullied like no president before, and I hope no other president after him will be subjected to the same treatment. Let’s also face the fact that the GOP is to blame – maybe. Or, are the Dems? It all began once upon a time in never never land when Jimmy Carter was in office. No one was happy with him. Ronald Reagan literally sold not only his soul, but that of the entire party, to the devil when he was forced to triangulate with the religious right in order to win. When he refused to follow their demands, the likes of Richard Viguerie, Howard Phillips, Phyllis “Senile Old Bat” Schlafly, and so forth and so on, demanded he not run for a second term. They were working on marching orders from R. J. Rushdoony, who was, even at that time calling the shots within the new religious cult he had created. From his vision would spring Gary North, the brains behind Ron Paul, his scion Rand, and Bill Gothard, who even now, in disgrace, is the most powerful person this country has ever produced.
This is the basis of today’s GOP. Like Lindsey Graham said, when it comes to immigration reform, he is completely ashamed of the House GOP, and their actions.
I have agreed with Lindsey, since 2006, on how immigration reform should be handled. The problem, though, is the fact that the GOP, especially those cravenly cowards in the House, scrape and bow to the highly inflated numbers, and pseudo power of the anti-immigration organizations. For some strange reason Republicans are far more acceptableness to the foibles of the alleged grass roots. It isn’t that Democrats are perfect. They were nasty to Reagan, especially socially. That’s how Rush Limbaugh managed to get his start, defending Reagan. At first, he was funny, then he became nasty. The far right he empowered mimicked him and became even nastier. They treated Bill Clinton like dirt. When George W. Bush was in office, the left retaliated. And, now the GOP is retaliating against the Dems.
It is a vicious cycle, devouring and destroying good men and women. Neither Clinton, Bush, nor Obama deserve the way they have been treated by the extremes of both parties and their own. It makes a person wonder why people keep re-electing completely flawed embarrassments like the recently deceased Marion Barry and Joe Arpaio. It proves how irrational base voting is, when their emotions can be manipulated to keep certain factions in power.
Barack Obama has suffered even more than did George W. Bush. No, it isn’t because of his race, but because of Citizen’s United and the flow of unlimited campaign cash. Unlimited campaign cash now makes an imperial presidency a given. Obama has been quite circumspect until now. He did so to the determent of his own legacy. The sign of the man, getting his ‘groove’ back is a good thing, no matter if you are a Democrat or Republican
