Letting It Be

The song, considered one of the greatest, ever written, was about his mother.  I think we have reached that point when dealing with the growing protests over police shootings and the taking of lives by cops.  It is entirely possible, the results of the protests, this so-called growing movement may be worse than the problems we are having today.  When I say ‘worse’, the unintended consequences could be crippling to the criminal judicial system in this country.  I also suspect, by the time, all is said and done, when local law enforcement is divested of its power (and it needs to lose the militarization) it is going to be open season on cops in this country.  It’s also possible, by the time the protests are over, and the dust settles that  no person in their right mind is going to want to be a cop.  The only ones who are going to want to be cops are brutes, incompetents, and the corrupt – just what they are finding in Cleveland.  Only power-mad headline grabbers like Sheriff Joe are going to want to be in law enforcement.  In fact, law enforcement has become so hardened to the realities of life and basic humanity that, in California, a cop could be fired for giving water to a suicidal student, and calming him, instead of brutalizing him with a Taser.

One of the real problems dealing with cops who kill is the fact that grand juries rarely indict them.  Robert Ethan Saylor was asphyxiated in January, of 2013.  The man, with an IQ of 14, was watching a movie.  He became agitated.  He was slaughtered for not following orders.  In 2010, Steven Eugene Washington was shot dead because he gave cops a blank stare.  He was autistic.  In Sonoma County, Andy Lopez had a BB Gun.  Thinking it was an AK-47, cops slaughtered him, shooting him 8 times.  In Detroit, 7-year-old Aiyana Stanley-Jones was shot by cops, on a drug raid. The manslaughter charges against them was dismissed.

Once in awhile, a cop is indicted. In South Carolina, Richard Combs was indicted for gunning down Barnard Bailey.  It does happen, but rarely.  Maybe, part of the problem is how prosecutors go at things.  Let’s be very honest here.  Prosecutors are elected.  They have a tendency to run on ‘law and order’.  Law and order are great talking points for voters, clubs, civic organizations, pandering to a certain ‘white’ constituent.  Let’s be honest about this.  They think people of color just don’t bother voting, just like they think young people don’t vote.  The voter, to them is a certain color, living in a certain place, with a certain amount of money and certain ‘values’.  These values want law and order.

Prosecutors and cops have a special relationship.  They work with one another on a daily basis. What prosecutor wants to muck up that relationship?

We have a serious problem here.  There are those who are suggesting the grand jury system, which dates back to the 14th Century, needs to be changed.  It has worked for centuries. Maybe nothing needs to be changed but prosecutors.  The way you do that is at the ballot box.  The way to effect change is not through continued marching, and demonstrations.  Sure, they get attention for a subject, but what – then?  Effect change at the ballot box.

Like Sir Paul wrote:

When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

And when the broken hearted people
Living in the world agree
There will be an answer, let it be
For though they may be parted
There is still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Yeah there will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

Let it be, let it be
Ah let it be, yeah let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
And when the night is cloudy
There is still a light that shines on me
Shine on until tomorrow, let it be
I wake up to the sound of music,
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
Yeah let it be, let it be
Let it be, yeah let it be
Oh there will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, yeah let it be
Oh there will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Ah let it be, yeah let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
