They say Nero fiddled while Rome burned.
In India, one bride is burned alive every hour, because of insufficient dowry. Every single hour a woman in India is burned alive. Every single hour a woman in India is burned alive. Every hour in India, a woman is burned alive, to death.
The civilized world is stunned over the horrific auto-de-fé of Jordanian fighter pilot, First Lieutenant Moaz al-Kasasbeh. In response Jordan has executed several lovely ISIS psychopaths, including Sajida al-Rishawi. While I am not an advocate for capital punishment, there are times when it is necessary. This was one of those times. I was wondering if the Jordanians had the fortitude to execute her. They did. Anti-war types are trying to equate the atrocities of war with the abject barbarity of putting a man in a cage and burning him alive. War is hell, with very bad things happening to people who don’t deserve having bad things happen to them. It is a horrible thing, but not done deliberately. Unfortunately, execution by burning is still fairly common in parts of the world, for things like witchcraft, or an easy way for a husband in India to get rid of that annoying wife, and keep her dowry. As far as Islam is concerned, Muslim clerics the world over have denounced what ISIS did as un-Islamic. The practice of Sati is an Indian Hindu ritual of burning a widow on her husband’s funeral pyre. In 2010, there were 8,391 dowry deaths by burning, in India. The statistic was that a woman was burned to death every 90 minutes.
It is known as the Dowry Culture. Bride Burning is a part of that culture. The great irony is that, in India. Muslims are absolutely shocked and sickened over the practice, and bride burning. This is important when discussing the ISIS brutality against Kasasbeh, and any discussion about the brutality of Islam. The barbaric practice also occurs in Bangladesh and Pakistan. In 2012, 8,233 women were killed in dowry related violence.
In Tanzania, in October, 14 people were arrested with the murder of seven individuals who were burned alive, over allegations of witchcraft. In India, those who burn a young woman alive, murdering her, are rarely even arrested. Some of the individual who were burned to death – burned alive – were burned, by Christian ministers. It is happening in Papua New Guinea.
Contrary to popular opinion, the early Christian Church in Europe did everything possible to prevent witchcraft accusations and executions. It wasn’t until the 13th Century in France, when certain religious organizations became quite wealthy, wealthier than the crown, did ‘inquisition’ become a political ploy. It wasn’t until 1484 that Pope Innocent VIII began the culture of inquisition, witch-hunts, and punishment. Witch-hunts were far more common in Germany than in any other part of Europe. A person was far more likely to be burned alive if they were Jewish.
“…Several incidents are recorded of massacres on Jews from the 12th through 16th centuries in which they were burned alive, often on account of the blood libel. In 1171 in Blois, for example, 51 Jews were burned alive (the entire adult community). In 1191, King Philip Augustus ordered around 100 Jews burnt alive. That Jews purportedly performed host desecration also led to mass burnings; in 1243 in Beelitz, the entire Jewish community was burnt alive, and in 1510 in Berlin, some 26 Jews were burnt alive for the same “crime”. During the “Black Death” in the mid-14th century a spate of large-scale massacres occurred. An often imputed crime was that the Jews had poisoned the wells. In 1349, as panic grew along with the increasing death toll from the plague, and rumours from tortured Jews confessing to be responsible for the “poisoning of wells” and similar murderous behaviour, general massacres, but also, specifically, mass burnings began to occur. 600 Jews were burnt alive in Basel alone. A large mass burning occurred in Strasbourg, where no fewer than 2000 Jews were burnt alive.
A Jewish male, Johannes Pfefferkorn, met a particularly gruesome death in 1514 in Halle. He had been charged with a number of crimes, such as having impersonated a priest for twenty years, performed host desecration, stolen Christian children to be tortured and killed by other Jews, poisoned 13 people and poisoning wells. He was lashed to a pillar in such a way that he could run about it. Then, a ring of glowing coal was made around him, a fiery ring that was gradually pushed ever closer to him, until he was roasted to death….”
According to Matthew White’s Atrocities: The 100 Deadliest Episodes in Human History, the episode that ranks #18 were the Roman Gladiatorial Games! Humans have always done horrible things to other humans. We would like to think that eras of what can only be considered barbarian activity are behind us, but, according to White, the most vicious, horrible century known to humanity was the 20th. Bad people do bad things to good people. There are times when good people do bad things to good people. It is the nature of the beast.
This aside, what is going on with ISIS is a little more than ‘civilized’ man can tolerate. They’re a little over the top, with no redeeming values. What worries me even more than the internal workings of this group of monsters are the individuals who leave to join them. There are rumors that some are disenchanted and want to return home. They should not be allowed to do so. What needs to be stated, and has not been mentioned is the type of person who would leave home to join a group of psychopaths. They know who they are and what they are doing, yet they go anyway.
Anyone who would join up with a group like ISIS is a psychopath. There is no other logical explanation. They aren’t delusional ideologues. It is not about religion. It is about destroying and doing evil things to people. They are incapable of behaving in any other way. The thing about someone like this is, even if they remained in their nice, happy home towns, they would end up doing something horrible. By their going over to another part of the world, to join a group of barbarous monsters, they are doing us a favor. They are not here in the US to murder someone and destroy a life here. Yes, that’s a selfish way to look at it, but let’s be honest.
I began writing this article around 2:30 or so. I finished it at 5:30. During that time, 3 women in India were burned alive. Why is the life of a Jordanian fighter pilot more important than theirs?
Oh, those who say that Christianity or Islam are the most violent religions in history aren’t even close.
