All We Need Is Love

There’s nothing wrong with having standards and rules.  If we don’t have personal standards, we’re not much of anything.  Personal standards should be that, personal.  They should be a rule book for living.  There is nothing wrong with standards.  We should all have them, no matter what our faith. But, when those standards and those rules become so rigid and so filled with hate, that they violate everything we Christians believe, then there is something wrong.

This is the problem within the far right, these days.  They have somehow managed, with the adoption of the heretical cult invented by  R. J. Rushdoony, adapted by Scary Gary North, and popularized by Bill Gothard to pervert the very teachings of Christ.  If they aren’t practicing their wrath and hatred on one group, it’s another.  These days, they aren’t too happy with the gay/lesbian community, to the point where they want to violate the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and push our country back into a dark age that never really exist.  In doing so, they are inching ever so closer to a fascist state of mind.

Currently they don’t like abortions, women who speak their mind, independent women, and gays/lesbians.  For awhile I thought abortion was their biggest hate, but evidently it now is a distant second to their hatred of gays and lesbians.  They are sinners.  Well, what’s the big deal. I’m a sinner.  We are all sinners in the eyes of God. None are perfect. Being gay or lesbian is no worse than being a lying politician or a preacher fooling around with the deacon’s wife.  Somehow I think it’s a heck of a lot less damning than being a minister who is a pedophile, or allows them to molest children, while saying nothing.

Christ hung out with sinners.  He hung out with some of the worst of the worst.  Zacchaeus was one of the worst of the worst.  The principle tax collector for the Jericho region, he was a lying, cheating, larcenous, creep who bilked his fellow Jews out of a fortune.  When he found out that Christ was coming to dine with him, he repented, and gave away half of what he owned to those in need.  According to the writings of Clement of Alexandria, he became Matthias, going on to become the first Bishop of Caesarea.

Christ forgave him.
Christ forgives us all.
There is no difference in the fact that we are straight or gay.
Christ forgave him.

Someone needs to tell this to Joel McDurmon, son-in-law to Scary Gary North, or grand-sin-in-law of R. J. Rushdoony, who thinks homosexuals need to be stoned to death.  All you need is love, right?

“…“God has revealed that specific sins are also civil crimes…. God also reveals specific punishments for specific civil crimes,” he writes. “He revealed that some civil crimes require restitution, a few require the death penalty. Where God says a civil crime deserves the death penalty, I propose that we keep in step with the first greatest commandment and recognize His total sovereignty in heart, soul, strength, and mind.

“Now, it just so happens that God revealed that the homosexual act is a civil crime, and it just so happens that He revealed that the homosexual act as a civil crime deserves the death penalty,” McDurmon continues.

In AV’s view, homosexuality is just one among many crimes that merit the death penalty. Christian Reconstructionists call for the death penalty for as many as 20 offenses, including adultery, homosexuality, fornication, witchcraft, incorrigible juvenile delinquency and spreading false religions.

One prominent Christian Reconstructionist leader, Gary North, has even made the case that stoning is the biblically preferred means of execution…”

There is more:

“…The Biblically approved methods of execution include burning (at the stake for example), stoning, hanging, and “the sword.” Gary North, the self-described economist of Reconstructionism, prefers stoning because, among other things, stones are cheap, plentiful, and convenient. Punishments for non-capital crimes generally involve whipping, restitution in the form of indentured servitude, or slavery. Prisons would likely be only temporary holding tanks, prior to imposition of the actual sentence….”

Matthew 22:36-40

‘Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?’ He said to him, ‘ “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.’

Now, the way I see it, it looks like if we don’t love, then we are breaking the greatest commandment of them all.  That is – unless you are someone like Bill Gothard.  Then, you  put caveats on it.

Bill Gothard

Bill Gothard takes the simple commandment of loving the Lord, and your neighbor and turns it into 49 character traits.  It morphed into this.  Strange, but, if  you spend some time looking for passages about loving your neighbor, you’re not going to find it in the writings of Rushdoony, North, or Gothard. You won’t find much about the Beatitudes, or love, in general.  But, you will find discussions about stoning homosexuals to death.

Nothing you can do but you can learn to be you in time
It’s easy

Nothing you can see that isn’t shown
There’s nowhere you can be that isn’t where you’re meant to be

The only reason we are going through the rabid anti-gay/lesbin bigotry in this nation is because – directly because of Rushdoony, North, and Gothard. When one realizes that Rushdoony was a truly nasty racist, considering anyone who wasn’t of European genetics to be of a lessor mind-set, one can only wonder when this same bunch is going to start practicing their own special little brand of racism and bigotry against people who aren’t of the same race as are they.  They’re already doing this with Hispanics and anyone who is of the Muslim religion.  If it weren’t so serious, if they weren’t so powerful and control so many politicians and states, it would almost be laughable.  In this day and age, this like this should not be happening.  We’re in the middle of a very bad satire, right?

In certain states, I truly suspect what we are seeing is a stealth attack on the Civil Rights Act of 1964.  These adorable libertarian leaning godly men and a few women, are enamored of states’ rights.  I think some of this is about their mission from their version of ‘god’.  Here in New Mexico, I am ashamed to say they passed one of the first defense of religion laws. I am proud to say that the state supreme court basically entered it to the point where I don’t think anyone even bothers with it.
