I am a pack rat. I admit I am a pack rat. I horde books, shoes, handbags, and maybe cats. About a month ago I was watching one of those shows about hoarders, while I was talking to my sister. I told her I needed to start cleaning off shelves and dumping stuff, fast. It has evolved into the garage sale from hell, or as one of my best friends says, an “Epic” garage sale. I’ve started a blog to detail what I have begun putting up info about some of the things I’m selling.
One of the good things about being strapped for cash is not spending money on stuff. The confessed shoe junkie hasn’t bought a pair now – three years this week! I wanted to see if I could do it, and I did. Don’t worry, when I can afford it, I’ll make up for lost time. But, not spending has had its benefits.
Do you know a hoarder? I have a very good friend who is a borderline hoarder of antiques. Three years ago, when I last saw her, I realized I had to stop buying antiques. I haven’t been in an antique shop in nearly 3 years. I just can’t see buying something, just to buy something. That’s an entirely new philosophy for me.
So, I’m cleaning and tossing. Trying to sell what I can, just for the heck of it. The most fun part is I’ve managed to locate a brand new start-up library that wants as many books as possible – and won’t sell them. That’s a treasure. They also want all my space stuff for an archive. If they are serious about an archive, I’ve started talking to them about my research and papers. It’s exciting to know that they are interested in preserving what I have.
We do need to clean out our stuff once in awhile. Mine had reached the point where it was becoming a burden. It is like letting go of baggage – literally. I have a couple nice pieces of luggage I’m selling. Shelves that haven’t been cleaned out in ages are clean. Two closets are clean. I’m dumping a bunch of DVDs. Can’t see keeping them. The question is if I should sell one of my old MacBook Pros.
If posting is a little hit or miss, you now know why.
P. S. Don’t let me forget the golf clubs.
