Yesterday was Canadian baritone Gerald Finley’s birthday. I know it doesn’t sound glamorous or complementary, unless we’re talking baseball and a pitcher. The man’s a workhorse. He also competent, with a beautiful voice. Let’s put it this way. He’s the guy who has a tendency to win recording awards. One cool piece of trivia about him is that in August of 2014 he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, raising over $10,000 for charity.
Because this is also the birthday week of Mozart, it’s a good week to celebrate the baritone, who has a tendency to specialize in Mozart, when he isn’t doing something entirely new, risky, and exciting. He does a lot of modern opera. We’ll start with my favorite, the Champagne Aria.
