My real objection to conservative Islam is the fact that there is absolutely NO tolerance for women. Women are not even second class citizens. The real problem with progressives in the west is that their politically correct inclinations have required them to betray what they once believed about feminism. Instead, women are relegated to the back of the bus, the basement, and are now told to be covered, and basically either get with the program or shut up. We’re told this is what women of the Muslim world want, and this is how they have always lived. The problem is that nothing can be farther from the truth. There are thousands of Muslim women in this country who have begun rebelling, trying to make their voices heard. But, politically correct progressive women, once feminists, don’t seem to comprehend there is a difference. They don’t seem
to understand like many of them don’t understand there are differences within the Christian world. The average Muslim woman in this country is sick and tired of being treated like she has no role in her own religion.
“…“While the free world awaits a Muslim reformation, the leader of the free world shows blatant disregard for gender equality by visiting a mosque that treats females like second-class citizens,” says Raheel Raza, a Pakistani-Canadian activist, author and cofounder of the Muslim Reform Movement, a new initiative that we support, advocating for peace, women’s rights and secular governance. “This makes our work as activists extremely difficult because equality is one of the main tenets of our reform movement.”…”
Asra Q. Nomani and Ify Okoye have a very interesting column in the NYTimes, basically chastising President Obama for visiting a mosque and giving silent agreement to what is basically an apartheid system against women in the Muslim world. The problem is the politically correct culture doesn’t understand the difference. Instead, women like this are trotted out as an example of who and what the good little, obedient, Islamic woman is – she who must always be considered less than equal. Her head must be covered, which is a violation of the Koran. Yep, it’s a violation.
“…Today, in an estimated two-thirds of mosques around the United States, women and girls are segregated in dark basements, sparse balconies, separate rooms and even behind shower curtains in the “sisters’ section,” listening to Friday sermons piped in through shaky sound systems and watching them, if we are lucky, via TV screens. It’s too often only on “interfaith” occasions like the president’s visit that women and girls get to step forward into the “brothers’ section.”
Muslim Americans, like us, are not alone in pushing back against such discrimination. A movement of women and men within orthodox Judaism, Open Orthodoxy, is seeking to create greater equality in prayer space, religious leadership and educational roles. Synagogues, such as the National Synagogue in Washington, D.C., are beginning to hire female religious leaders. (Reform movements within Catholicism, like the Women’s Ordination Conference, also question discriminatory practices)….”
Women in Islam are praised by the patriarchal religious world. It is fascinating how the liberal world is so quick to demand American women embrace a cultural curiosity, which is the product of hard-core conservative Islam, which is only a few decades old. If you dare say anything about this, the bullies come out attacking, telling anyone who dares write about it, that they don’t know what they are saying. All good women of Islam cover their hair.
Sorry, but they don’t.
Once again, liberal ignorance does more harm than good.
“…Last week, three female religious leaders — a Jewish rabbi, an Episcopal vicar and a Unitarian reverend — and a male imam, or Muslim prayer leader, walked into the sacred space in front of the ornately-tiled minbar, or pulpit, at the Khadeeja Islamic Center in West Valley City, Utah. The women were smiling widely, their hair covered with swaths of bright scarves, to support “Wear a Hijab” day.
The Salt Lake Tribune published a photo of fresh-faced teenage girls, who were not Muslim, in the audience at the mosque, their hair covered with long scarves. KSL TV later reported: “The hijab — or headscarf — is a symbol of modesty and dignity. When Muslim women wear headscarves, they are readily identified as followers of Islam.”…”
The bigotry of the left is astounding in scope. Instead of investigating how normal Muslim women feel, they accept the lies of the extremists. Aren’t Muslim women entitled to the same things we are? I always thought they were. Maybe that’s why I don’t have the stomach to be a liberal. I think people – all people have equal rights.
