I am a confessed baritone junkie. It is very, very rare that I bother with anything else but baritones. But, once in awhile a voice comes along that is so amazing it needs to be celebrated. On Wednesday night, one of those opera moments is going to occur at the Met. The soprano I think is THE NEXT BIG ONE is finally getting a chance to be heard. Latonia Moore is doing Cio-Cio-san! I don’t like Butterfly, but if I were in the city, I would be standing in line for this ticket! Frankly, I think history could be made Wednesday night.
This woman has a remarkable voice, and a potential to be a powerhouse. I have been completely annoyed that she was left off the schedule this season, but maybe coming on this way, as a replacement for Hei-Kyung Hong. She will get a heck of a lot more attention. The poor woman appears to have been fated to step into the turban of one of the two greatest sopranos this country has ever produced. When she did her last minute Aida several years ago everyone was amazed. I love Leontyne. Latonia will never be Leontyne, and we should not compare, but the voices are a bit similar. This young woman could be a superstar, if given the opportunity to shine.
