Sunday Morning Opera: Keenlyside’s Giovanni

screen-shot-2016-10-08-at-9-37-10-pmSimon Keenlyside is back at the Met, doing Giovanni.  I like his Giovanni.  Heck, I like his Mozart, period.  His Mozart is just plain elegant.  Granted, I am extremely prejudiced.  There will never be another Giovanni as great as Sherrill Milnes.  At least there are some critics who are finally discovering what I’ve known for most of my life.  The greatness of his Giovanni is now being acknowledged.  He is even being hailed as the greatest of the modern era, of not the greatest Giovanni, period.

Keenlyside, though, is the best today.  The critics say that he has lost something with the voice.  That’s okay.  It happens to everyone. Today we have a little bonus of Bryn Terfel as Leperello! I love Giovanni. He is the eternal male, made modern in the form of James Bond and James T. Kirk.

Alright, let’s be honest, with our baritones, it’s all about the hunk.  I see nothing wrong with the tasteful exploitation of a good baritone …. voice.
