Sunday Morning Opera: Happy Birthday Thomas Hampson

Screen Shot 2016-07-02 at 2.37.13 PMThomas Hampson is proof that men are basically disgusting and there is nothing fair when it comes to men and women and aging.  He is living proof that men just get better with age and we women fall apart.  I remember seeing him at the Met, his debut year of 1986.  I think it was maybe his third performance.  Could have been his second.  I have the ticket stubs, somewhere.  He was playing the count in Le nozze di Figaro.   My cousin, Julie, immediately began calling him her Handsome Baritone.  We had a running ‘argument’ with it for ages, me being the compulsive Sherrill Milnes junkie.

The Handsome Baritone has endured.  He has become a champion for American music and song.  And, he just gets better looking with age.  Darn it!  He had a birthday on June 28, as usual, aging beautifully!   Just as importantly, his voice has survived the test of time.  The man is a workhorse.  By now we should start seeing a little change in his voice, but he’s as good as ever. Even more importantly, he sings Cole Porter. I love Cole Porter!

My favorite song… sigh.

The thing I dislike most about the Handsome Baritone is he’s proof that men just get better with age and we women just plain old age.
