I have been involved in an interesting discussion on Twitter. Who was the greatest Henry Aaron or George Herman Ruth? One guy was almost insulted because I said Aaron was/is the greatest. They were/are different men for different eras. I grew up about an hour and a half from Atlanta. Aaron was my hometown hero, basically.
The truth of the matter is maybe Aaron might be the better player. Ruth pushed baseball out of the dead ball era, almost single-highhandedly turning the home run into an art form. But – when you think about pitching, how would Ruth have handled the likes of a Bob Gibson, Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, or a Tom Seaver?
If we are honest, maybe Aaron is/was the better player.
